The community of Ridgewood is a vibrant group of neighborhoods in Queens, a culturally diverse borough of New York City, New York. Ridgewood is unique, providing many great local amenities to residents, and is considered a great place to raise a family in the Big Apple.

Dutch immigrants first settled the area that is now called Ridgewood in Queens, Ridgewood, to this day, lays claim to a number of unique historic buildings that give us a glimpse into what New York looked like in years past. The Onderdonk House was built in the early eighteenth century and was a part of the original Dutch settlement in this area. It is a house made primarily of stone, and has a very unique architectural style. The Onderdonk House is the oldest building of Dutch origin in the entire city of New York today, and is worth visiting if you are ever in the area.

You might be wondering how Ridgewood got its name, as it doesn’t sound very Dutch, and that is because a large group of English immigrants came to this area in the early nineteenth century and gave it its name. Later in the nineteenth century, Ridgewood saw more immigration from other European and eastern European countries, including Germany, Romania, and Italy. It wasn’t until decades later that more immigrants from even more diverse countries arrived to this area of New York City, including immigrants from Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, and Ecuador. This is part of what gives Ridgewood such a vibrant flavor; there are many diverse cultures that call Ridgewood home.

The typical neighborhoods throughout Ridgewood are fairly densely populated, with many very tall apartment buildings, which consist primarily of single-family homes and townhouses. Many of the families that live here in Ridgewood rely on public transportation to get from home to work each day. New York City provides so many great local amenities, simply by living here, and the residents of Ridgewood benefit from everything that living in the Big Apple has to offer. Many Ridgewood residents commute into Manhattan every day, by train, subway, or bus.

The New York City Department of Education serves all of the public schools that in turn serve the community of Ridgewood. With access to high quality public schools and high quality educational resources, the residents of Ridgewood also have access to several private schools and charter schools, and parents appreciate the fact that they have several different options to choose from.
