Clearview, a neighborhood in the borough of Queens, is only a few square blocks from end to end. Unheard of by most, with the exception of local residents, Clearview in and of itself is obscure. But thanks to the reputation of New York pizza and all of its glory, Clearview has a special claim to fame: Patsy’s Pizzeria.

Patsy’s is the embodiment of what the rest of the world thinks of when they think of New York pizza, and has been that embodiment since 1933, when it was founded by Italian immigrants Pasquale “Patsy” and Carmella Lancieri. The Lancieri’s built a business that was family-centered, with family dining as its image that attracted many to its doors. The tight, communal neighborhoods of Queens—made up primarily of Italian immigrants in the early twentieth century—needed a place to gather and preserve their unique heritage and cuisine. Patsy’s Pizzeria provided that place, and has continued to provide a welcoming, family-oriented atmosphere ever since.

Patsy’s garnered notoriety in the ensuing decades of the twentieth century; famous New Yorkers and New York visitors made a point of visiting Patsy’s regularly, such as Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Tony Bennett, Joe DiMaggio, Yogi Berra, and even Francis Ford Coppola. Coppola even used the environment of Patsy’s to shape the iconic roles and performances associated with the classic Godfather movies in the 1970s.

Political celebrities have also made visits to Patsy’s, including Rudy Giuliani, Mayor Bloomberg, and others to make stump speeches to their constituents. At less than 100 years old, Patsy’s has established a special image and reputation for Italian pizzeria dining that endures to this day. It serves hundreds of thousands of pies each year, to visitors and local Clearview residents alike.

Patsy’s Pizzeria is an example of such classic Americana style. It’s founding is reminiscent of the visions of the American Dream—immigrants can come to a land of promise, work hard, start small, and realize the biggest dreams of wealth, prosperity, and a better community as a result. Clearview residents are collectively blessed by the presence of Patsy’s, just as Patsy’s is blessed for the success it has found in this little neighborhood in the greater Queens area.

No doubt, Patsy’s came to be what it is as result of community rallying around it. Its pizza is quality, but perhaps more importantly, its atmosphere kept Italian families coming back to it year after year.
