    About Long Island City

The neighboring communities of Astoria and Long Island City are located within the borough of Queens in the great city of New York. Often confused with Long Island itself, Long Island City is named as such because of its location on the island, which can be confusing to those unfamiliar with the area. Astoria and Long Island City share a lot more than just the border of their communities. They share a common culture and oftentimes the lines are blurred between the two areas.

Public transportation is excellent here in Astoria and Long Island City. It's actually one of the reasons for this area's popularity. Being just one short subway ride away from the popular area of midtown Manhattan, Astoria and Long Island City are popular communities for commuters, or people who love Manhattan but can't afford to live there. Though this area, and Queens as a whole, has struggled in the past with poverty, crime, and rampant drug problems, the late 1900s saw a noticeable shift in the local culture. As the hipsters of the early 2000s "discovered" this part of Queens as a sustainable place to live, hip new venues began to pop up in response, and both Astoria and Long Island City saw rapid changes as more businesses and developments popped up in the area.

So what is attracting so many young people and young families to the communities of Astoria and Long Island City? One huge attraction is the location and its views. Get an apartment here (for way less than it would cost in Manhattan) and you have the chance at many unique views of the city from Long Island. You get to enjoy that big city feeling while being outside of the thick of it, and that is very attractive to both the young professional on a budget and the young family looking for a good, more affordable place to raise their children while maintaining a close proximity to all of the jobs and opportunities that New York City has to offer.

Astoria and the neighboring community of Long Island City have a long history in the film industry, and this is one of the attracting factors to young hipsters and film buffs. The Museum of the Moving Image is also located here, and takes visitors through the history of film, not only here in New York City, but around the world. One of Paramount Picture's studios is located near the museum, and functions as one of the facilities for modern day film making and editing.

For local families, all public school educational resources are provided by the New York Department of Education. Beyond the public schools, there are also a number of private schools and charter schools available to local students. If students attending any of the local schools need extra after-school help, local tutors that live in Astoria and Long Island City are available. These local tutors can cater to each student, helping them develop the skills they need to achieve their educational dreams.
