    About Lake Balboa

Lake Balboa is home to multiple beautiful parks. One of the best known is Anthony C. Beilenson Park also known as Lake Balboa Park, a popular destination for Lake Balboa tutors and students alike.

Anthony C Beilenson’s story is an interesting one, his progressive work helped shape California State legislature. He served 10 terms in the United States House of Representatives from 1977 to 1997, was a member of the California Senate from 1967 – 1976 and the California State Assembly from 1963 – 1967. After graduating from Harvard Law, the beginning of his career saw his relocation from his hometown in New York to Beverly Hills to partner in a law firm.

Beilenson soon became deeply and passionately involved in local politics. He sought to use local politics as a means to make positive changes within local communities in California. He was very successful in pushing through what some may see as more controversial enactments. Lake Balboa tutors will reference the ‘Beilenson Act’; the enactment of this legislature requires public hearings whenever hospitals are closed or reduce services. However despite the prior act taking his name, Anthony C Beilenson’s most noteworthy accomplishment was to author the 1967 Therapeutic Abortion Act. Abortion still remains a hot and much disputed topic to this day. Beilenson’s Therapeutic Abortion Act is documented as one of the most liberal abortion laws of that time. It legalized abortion in circumstances where a pregnancy was the result of rape or incest or when a woman’s mental or physical health was deemed to be at risk.

It was in 1998 in tribute to his extensive work of community and government service to California State, that Lake Balboa Park was officially renamed to Anthony C. Beilenson Park. It is the biggest park in the community. Balboa Lake sits at the center of the park, an artificial lake that is supplied with reclaimed water from the Donald C. Tillman Water Reclamation Plant. As Beilenson worked tirelessly for the residents of local communities it seems only appropriate that the park is also home to a universally accessible playground. As the name would suggest this playground is designed so that all members of the community can come and enjoy it. The park houses many other amenities for Lake Balboa students to enjoy, including barbecue pits, a bicycle path, a cascade, a children's play area, a fly fishing area, a jogging path, a lake for fishing, a launch ramp, pedal boats, picnic pavilions with picnic tables, private boating, a remote control boating cove, and toilet facilities. There are also beautiful Japanese cherry blossom trees in the park, which typically flower at the very beginning of spring.
