    About Encino

Encino, an affluent community in the San Fernando Valley, is perhaps best known for the 1990s comedy, Encino Man, which starred Brendan Fraser as a caveman who wakes from his fossilized state in Encino, California. Hilarity ensues. What many people may not know about Encino, however, is that no public schools operate within city boundaries. Instead, all local educational institutions are either private schools or charters. One of these private schools is Crespi Carmelite, a Catholic all-male College Preparatory High School. As the name suggests, the Carmelite order of the church runs the school, preparing its young men not only for life in college, but in the world after education.

Academics at the school are rigorous, as one would expect them to be, but in addition to classes, student activities are a thriving part of student life at Crespi Carmelite. One of these activities, surprisingly, is devoted to the eastern art of meditation. Students convene to practice meditating, which is a way for the mind and body to relax. Meditation has been an integral part of spiritual practices across all religions, and Crespi Carmelite recognizes the valuable benefits from such a practice.

The club’s description, listed on Crespi Carmelite’s website, is that, “Students practice increasing their awareness through various exercises that teach body focus, mindfulness and patience.” Body focus is an important element of learning—bodies in a state of focused calm are better attuned to understanding the subject matter of a classroom. Mindfulness is self-awareness, which is another admirable attribute to develop while in school. Mindfulness allows students to engage fully with their surroundings, as well as a recognition of the beauty of the world around them. Patience, of course, is a natural benefit that comes from practicing meditation—struggling students may find that this is one more hurdle to overcome, in addition to bad grades and lack of comprehension in the classroom. Patience, however, sustains students through their difficulties. Learning patience is perhaps the most important benefit for meditation, especially when it comes to academic performance.

Meditation, it should be noted, has not proven to raise grades or test scores in its practitioners. However, its mentally-rewarding practice surely is a boon to those in the thick of their educations. Tutors in Encino may not have students meditate their way through a session, but they may suggest a calming routine that can be established before they work with their clients. Likewise, tutors do not work exclusively with Crespi Carmelite students—their services are available to all who need them. But their clients would do well to take up meditation as yet another way to prepare the mind and the body for learning.
