When the Spanish explorers and missionaries landed in what is now La Cañada Flintridge, they established the ranchero of Rancho La Cañada. With Spanish origins, "La Cañada" roughly translates to mean "canyon", which is representative of the geography of the surrounding mountainous area. These rancheros were basically land grants from the government in order to encourage the settlement and development of the area. Eventually, in the mid 1900s, to separate cities were formed out of Rancho La Cañada — La Cañada and Flintridge.
