Whitpain Township is one of the oldest townships in all of Pennsylvania. Settled by farmers and Quakers fleeing England, modern Whitpain is much smaller than its original census size before the American Revolution. It once served as an important corridor during the American War for Independence, and famously housed George Washington in Dawesfield, a home off Lewis Lane in the township.
Dawesfield is alternatively known as Camp Morris since the property was once owned by James Morris, and is a large complex of early colonial buildings on a historic country house estate. A main house, barn, tenant house, and the farm manager’s house are all original to the property, as well as other stone and frame outbuildings that would have all contributed to a bustling, busy estate during its heyday.
Following the battle of Germantown in October 1777, George Washington was quartered in Dawesfield for several weeks. During this time, the war was at a precarious juncture. The British army had just enjoyed a victory and American troops were discouraged—Washington, especially, was concerned not only for his soldiers, but for the outcome of the war itself. Winter was approaching, supplies were low, and it was unclear whether or not the Continental army would succeed in its goals of helping establish a nation free from British rule.
At Dawesfiled, Washington was given the opportunity to recuperate and plan his next moves. Germantown had shown him that his troops were in need of better training and more effective communication between commanding officers and the columns of soldiers under their leadership. Washington’s grand plans for victory at Germantown were defeated, but Dawesfield offered him a chance to make new plans and prepare for the next move in the war. While there, he corresponded with his commanding officers, anticipated the next movements of the British army, and took the time necessary to formulate a plan for success.
Like the few weeks at Dawesfield, tutors in Whitplain Township offer students the unique opportunity to reconsider their existing academic habits and help them formulate new plans for success. Sometimes a respite from action is critical to see a change in defeat—certainly, struggling students can feel hopeless and frustrated when their previous plans do not work. Grade Potential tutors are there to reassure their clients of their potential, as well as help them form new plans the way Washington’s captains and lieutenants did in the fall of 1777. Washington experienced a few more setbacks after Dawesfield, but he ultimately went on to help win the War for Independence. Students who persist through their challenges will also find a reward for their efforts, just like Washington.
