Warrington, Pennsylvania’s history is deeply rooted in agriculture, literally! Warrington, Pennsylvania a township not a town, was founded by a handful of landowners who used their many acres primarily for for farms and dairies. As the areas surrounding Warrington began to grow, Warrington slowly transformed from vast acres of farmland to a small residential community. The township’s heritage in agriculture can still be seen today in land that has been set aside by the Bucks County Agricultural Land Preservation Program. Because there was such a dramatic decline in agriculture, the Bucks County Agricultural Land Preservation Program decided to take action and ensure that the agricultural legacy would continue on for generations to come. They help farmers by ensuring the agricultural land remains affordable and in the hands of those that will continue the farming traditions. The preservation program believes that supporting landowners is good for the economy, the environment, and future generations. They work hard to support farmers financially, and protect them legally, to ensure that there will continue to be small family run farms for years to come.
While Warrington is now more residential than farmland, the township did not make this transition until the 1950’s; because of this there are still visible agricultural roots that visitors and residents alike can enjoy. Apart from the many parks and trails, there is an active farm that is open to guests, for entertainment, education, and hands on farming experience. This farm is just one of the Buck County farms preserved by the Bucks County Agricultural Land Preservation Program. Winding Brook Farm has been a running farm and dairy for one hundred and fifteen years! The family and farming history can actually be traced back to the late 1700’s while the current property, was purchased in 1805. This family run farm now reaches out to the community with opportunities for guests that range from tractor shows to haunted hay rides. You might even be able to get tutored in the art of milking a cow! It has become the goal of the family to not only grow crops and raise cows, but to engage the community in the agricultural culture. Keeping this heritage alive, not only for Warrington, but for agricultural communities across the U.S., as family owned and run farms are declining across the nation.
To better understand the history and future of farming and agriculture, a Warrington tutor would be a great way, to expand on this knowledge and much more. A career in farming or whatever a student may plan for, can go a long way with a little support.
