Upper Darby Township is a large residential community in southeastern Pennsylvania. Upper Darby is probably most known for being home to Tower Theater. Tower Theater is a popular music venue, that hosts top musical acts from around the world.
Tower Theater was not always a successful music venue. In fact, Tower Theater wasn’t even always a music venue. When Tower Theater was built in 1927, it was created to be a movie theater. In 1928, the theater opened its doors for the first time, as a host to exhilarating vaudeville acts and exciting moving pictures. Unfortunately, by the 1970’s, the theater was in a decline. At that point, it had resorted to showing third run movies for a dollar a ticket. In 1972, the Tower was forced to shut down and refurbish a large portion of the theater because of a fire. When they reopened, Midnight Sun Concerts, a live music production company, held its first concert at Tower Theater. The headlining musicians were Dave Mason and Buzzy Linhart, and the show sold out. The next day, reviewer Jonathan Takiff wrote, “Philly finally has its Filmore.” Which was a reference to New York’s well known Fillmore East. Fillmore East is a famous music venue that is known for hosting some of the biggest rock musicians of its time. For the next three years the concerts put on by Midnight Sun at the Tower, would put Upper Darby on the map. Tower Theater’s example could tutor us all in adaptability, as they made the transition from a failing movie theatre to a famous music venue.
In addition to hosting memorable concerts, Tower Theater has been credited for introducing several noname bands that would soon become famous. The list includes David Bowie, The Spiders from Mars, Genesis with Peter Gabriel, and the E. Street Band with Max Weinberg and Roy Bittan. In fact, the night that the new E. Street Band debuted, marks the first time that Springsteen had ever earned $5000 dollars in one night. The Tower Theater would go on to host many famous artists, and gain national popularity. Looking back, Bowie and Phil Collins would say that the shows they played at Tower Theater were instrumental in gaining exposure to the American audience.
In 1975, Midnight Sun hosted their final concert at Tower Theater, because the venue was sold to Electric Factory Concerts. Under new management, the theater continued to host headliners including Paul Simon and Prince. Today, the theater is run by Live Nation/Electric Factory Concerts and has been compared to Beacon Theatre, a historic and prestigious theatre in New York City.
