    About Piedmont

Why climb a mountain when you can rise to fame and fortune on a hill. "In the Roaring Twenties, Piedmont, California was known as the “City of Millionaires.” There were more millionaires per square mile than in any city in the United States. Wow! Go to Piedmont for an easy climb. Here are a few folks who’ve met fame and fortune stepping up its hillsides to success.

Notable author Jack London wrote of the Alaskan pioneering spirit in his famous novel: Call of the Wild – 1903 -- while living on Blair Avenue in a house that still exists in Piedmont today. Clint Eastwood resided in Piedmont and attended Piedmont schools. John F. Kennedy's Secretary of Defense Robert S. McNamara grew up in Piedmont, where his family lived on Annerley, Road. Country Joe McDonald resided in Piedmont in the 1970s. Charles R. Schwab, founder of his famously productive discount stock brokerage firm lived in Piedmont in the early 1980s. So let’s take stock of it.

Piedmont is a city of only 11,000 residents, in the Bay area. Its name, Italian in origin, means foothill. In the early years and still today many Italian Americans settled in the Piedmont hills. It’s just south of the Oakland Hills, and Oakland’s burgeoning metropolis surrounds it. Piedmont folks have the best of both worlds. It frees their minds up for high flying accomplishments.

Once more the schools are turning out some fine scholars. The Piedmont Unified School District was ranked #10 of 756 school districts in the state of California. Its residents approved local bond measures to maintain top educational facilities. And the Piedmont Educational Foundation awards grants for academic innovation in Piedmont schools each year. Plus, it has an endowment fund of about $6 million!

Education, innovation, commitment to excellence and some enterprising and helpful Piedmont City Tutors help its youth sour to success the likes of its many successful people. Incorporated as a city in 1907, it’s already celebrated over a hundred successful years launching leaders in accomplishment. Ruth Leach Amonette, the first woman to become a vice president at IBM, was raised in and attended high school in Piedmont. It has launched famous actors like Dean Butler (Little house on the Prairie) and Austin Tichenor, of the Shakespeare theater company. Notable tennis player and coach Brad Gilbert grew up in Piedmont.

Success does take a bit of coaching, at times. Piedmont tutors are on hand to help students grasp the basics and soar on their special strengths, learn Physics, Calculus, Hollywood theater, or how to write a best seller.

Piedmont keeps cranking out visions of excellence: Elsie Whitaker Martinez, artist, Erin Fetherston, designer, and the philanthropist F. Wayne Valley, all from this city, once hosting more millionaires than any other in the USA. Valley was also a construction magnate, owner of the Oakland Raiders and a founding member of the AFL. What will Piedmont’s future youths do? The sky is the limit --with support, education, and myriad local roads to accomplishment in this renowned hillside city of Piedmont, CA – USA!
