Built in 1931, it can seat up to 3,000 people—the largest multi-purpose theatre on the West Coast— and was originally a movie theatre, constructed in the heyday of Hollywood’s Golden Era. The architect of the theatre was the renowned Timothy L. Pflueger, and it was one of the first Depression-era buildings to integrate the work of several artists into his design. The theatre’s success was brief, however, and by the 1940s, the auditorium fell into neglect and decline. The theatre’s needs were extensive and expensive, so the Oakland Symphony was struggling to maintain the costs. In a turn of creative problem-solving, the Oakland Symphony transferred the theatre to the City of Oakland for $1 in exchange for four decades of free rent.

After dedicated, meticulous authentic restorative efforts, the theatre became a member of the National Register of Historic Places, and later, it would become a California Registered Historic Landmark and a National Historic Landmark.
