    About Oakland

An artist’s utopia, Oakland, California, has the highest concentration of artists per capita in the United States. From cuisine and music to literature and cinema, Oakland’s significant art scene can not only be viewed in galleries and museums, tasted in restaurants, and enjoyed through live performance but felt and experienced.

One of the places in Oakland that caters to multiple forms of artistic expression is the the Paramount Theatre. Built in 1931, it can seat up to 3,000 people—the largest multi-purpose theatre on the West Coast— and was originally a movie theatre, constructed in the heyday of Hollywood’s Golden Era. The architect of the theatre was the renowned Timothy L. Pflueger, and it was one of the first Depression-era buildings to integrate the work of several artists into his design. This noteworthy design tactic was impressive for its ability to successfully orchestrate and harmonize various artistic disciplines and work into one cohesive body. Oakland tutors work in tandem with students to ensure they are prepared to achieve success.

The theatre’s success was brief, however, and by the 1940s, the auditorium fell into neglect and decline. It remained in its state of disrepair until the 1970s when a heroic effort on the part of the Oakland Symphony, the City of Oakland, and numerous private donors rushed to the Paramount’s resurrection. The theatre’s needs were extensive and expensive, so the Oakland Symphony was struggling to maintain the costs. In a turn of creative problem-solving, the Oakland Symphony transferred the theatre to the City of Oakland for $1 in exchange for four decades of free rent.

After dedicated, meticulous authentic restorative efforts, the theatre became a member of the National Register of Historic Places, and later, it would become a California Registered Historic Landmark and a National Historic Landmark. Oakland tutoring understands the value of diligent work and dedication and will work to ensure each student is improving and evolving.

The Paramount Theatre serves all of the arts, and after its extensive renovation and modern upgrades, the theatre is one of the Bay Area’s premier performing arts facilities. Currently, it is home to the Oakland East Bay Symphony and the Oakland Ballet, but it has played host to a myriad of events—from plays and stand-up comedy to lectures and screenings of classic movies.

Like those classic movies, the Paramount Theatre is an embodiment of Old Hollywood glam. Gold ornamentation, curving staircases, and luxurious drapery, grand Fountain of Light in the four-story Grand Lobby makes for an awe-inspiring first impression. It is a gorgeous backdrop for the events and shows that continue to perform on its impressive stage.
