    About Newark

When you consider the city of San Francisco, you might think of a few things: The Golden Gate Bridge, perhaps, with its sweeping span across the bay, or maybe the hills of the city, dotted with beautiful old Victorian homes and row houses built to teeter high up on vertical planes. Maybe you think of the progressive social culture of the city, with marches for equal rights a regular occurrence. It’s likely that Chinatown crosses your mind, which is an emblem of the city’s rich and diverse populations. You might think of a trolley car, an iconic mode of transportation throughout the city that still runs today along old cable tracks. Indeed, San Francisco’s identity as a city is inextricably tied to the presence of the cable car, thanks to the Carter Brothers the last few decades of the nineteenth century.

Thomas and Martin Carter were railroad car builders, with shops in the city of San Francisco, Sausalito, and Newark. Over 28 years, they built thousands of cars for the public transportation system of the bay area, the Southern Pacific Railroad, horse cars, cable cars, a few electrics, water tanks, turntables, and standard gauge equipment. The Bay Area would not have blossomed without their hard work, nor would its unique modes of transportation have come to fruition without the Carter Brothers’ design innovation. Their cars were lightweight, speedy, and safe, drawing thousands to use them for travel in and around the city.

At the Newark plant, each brother fulfilled his job according to his skills and abilities. Martin was a car builder, supervising the production and managing the business of the shops in Newark. Thomas was more business-minded, so he managed the books, made sales, advertised their products, and helped expand the business into other parts of the bay area previously mentioned. This was such an effective business model that the Carter Brothers were able to sell the Newark facility to Southern Pacific Railroad for their operations in the 1890s, and continue manufacturing for this growing company as the railroads stretched across the Northwestern United States. Both brothers were able to comfortably retire in 1902 after playing a key role in the development of the transportation system in San Francisco and the surrounding areas.

Like the Carter Brothers, every student is equipped with particular abilities—some struggle with some subjects and others will excel. Tutors in Newark, however, are there to ensure students meet their greatest potential. Knowing one’s strength and weakness is integral to academic achievement. Grade Potential tutors help students discover these same strengths and weaknesses, and ultimately work with them to overcome the obstacles impeding their grades and academic success.
