    About Berkeley

    Berkeley, California, known for its famous university and counter-culture since the 1960s, is a sizeable city on the San Francisco Bay. The Lawrence Hall of Science, a public science center in Berkeley, works with the University and the community to offer hands-on science exhibits, designs curriculum, aids professional development, and provides after school science resources to students of all ages.

    Named for Ernest Lawrence, a physicist and the university’s first Nobel laureate, The Lawrence Hall of Science was established in 1968. It houses a series of traveling and permanent exhibits, including insect displays, seismograph activity, nanotechnology, ingenuity labs, and other interesting and informative displays to appeal to a variety of visitors, from amateurs to credentialed scientists.

    Lawrence Hall has an robust education division, offering year-round youth and family classes and day camps on-site—a convenient location, to be sure, as UC Berkeley is just down the hill from The Hall. Educational opportunities include on a wide range of subjects, such as biology, chemistry, astronomy, mathematics, robotics, and art. In addition to these classes, summer camps are sponsored and held in other California locations in service of Lawrence Hall’s visions and goals. The Lawrence Hall of Science is the public science center of UC Berkeley. Its staff work with the University’s scientific experts from many fields to develop exhibits, like Big Dinos Return, Forces That Shape the Bay and Nanozone, as well as educational materials for teachers and families.
