STEP 3Noe Valley is a neighborhood in San Francisco, California. The neighborhood has recently become a more affluent area, as the majority demographics are changing. Now known as“Stroller Town;” the once blue collar neighborhood, is booming with young families. Noe Valley is also known for having surprisingly warm and sunny weather. Usually, San Francisco weather is known for being cool and overcast. But the neighborhood next to Noe Valley protects it from the marine layer that creates the gloomy fog and frigid wind. This has made Noe Valley a very desireable neighborhood.
Noe Valley is probably best known for having one of the largest concentrations of row houses in San Francisco. Row houses have become a very iconic part of the City; and in Noe Valley you can find streets that have up to a dozen Row houses on the same side. The major development of Noe Valley happened in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. At that time, architecture was strongly influenced by the classic Victorian and Edwardian styles. As homes were going up it was not uncommon to see, “rows,” of extravagant details, and designs of the classic aesthetic. However, the great earthquake of 1906, cost the City a great deal of its early architecture and a lot of homes had to be rebuilt. That is why finding up to twelve original row houses still in good repair, has set Noe Valley apart.
Row houses are also known as townhouses; which can be traced all the way back to 16th century Europe. Row houses are considered medium density housing, which means that they house a higher population than suburban subdivisions; but aren’t as densely populated as,” high density,” housing like apartment buildings. In the U.S., the first row houses were created between 1799 and 1820, in Philadelphia. The development was called Carstairs Row and was created by developer, William Sanson. Today, you can still visit a few of the original Carstairs Row buildings, that have been renovated into commercial buildings. Throughout the decades, row houses have become more and more common, but there are a few places throughout the U.S. that are particularly known for them. Baltimore, Boston, Chicago, New Orleans, New York City, and San Francisco are among those cities.
San Francisco took their reputation a step beyond traditional row houses, when residents began creating the, “Painted Ladies.” The “Painted Ladies” are Victorian and Edwardian houses that are painted with three or more colors and are used to accent the intricate architectural details. San Francisco is credited as the place of origin for the, “Painted Lady” style; and is especially known for homes with particularly bright or bold colors. This eye catching variation has helped create San Francisco’s iconic reputation.
