    About Martinez

A quaint town of rolling hills and natural landscapes, Martinez is iconic of Northern California beauty outside of the urban sprawl of San Francisco. This has been true for over a century—so true, in fact, that Martinez drew the presence of John Muir to the city to live out the last two and a half decades of his life. His residence in Martinez is remembered and commemorated in several ways, among them being State Route 4, referred to as John Muir Parkway, and the Muir Mansion, now a California historic site.

Muir was a world-renowned conservationist and lover of nature. While in Martinez, he realized many of his most famous accomplishments—who we know Muir to be now is a result of his time in Martinez. He co-founded and served as first president of the Sierra Club. He played an important role in the formation of the National Parks of the United States, and prevented Yosemite’s Hetch Valley from being dammed up. He also wrote hundreds of articles and several books on the virtues of preserving and conserving the beauty of nature at a time when urbanization and industrial growth were part and parcel of the American vision of greatness. He also set the precedent and laid foundations for what would become the National Park Service following his death.

Muir moved into the mansion in 1890, which his father in-law built a few years prior. The home sat on acres of ranch and fruit orchards, and Muir and his wife enjoyed a peaceful, prosperous life while living at the home. Currently, it houses Muir’s writing desk—found in his so-called “scribble den” where his manifestos and tracts were vigorously produced in the final decades of his life. He died in 1914, having made a lasting impact on the way the modern conservation movement thinks about humanity and its role in the natural world.

The home, now a registered Historic American Building, is open for tours to the public and sits on a 325-acre tract of native oak woodlands and grasslands historically owned by the Muir family. Though Martinez has grown, evolved, and been shaped by the events of a changing world, the Muir mansion stands much in the same way it did over one hundred years ago. The land is still pristine, undeveloped, and welcoming of all who wish to respect nature and their place in it. It is likely what Muir would want, that over a century after his death, the precious land and home he resided in are still the same as they ever were.

Muir’s hard work is unrivaled by many of his contemporaries—he truly stands out as a man of his era and a man of principle. The tutors who work in Martinez may never live up to Muir’s legend, nor the students they serve, but they can emulate the virtues espoused by Muir. Being honest, dedicated, and enthusiastic will lead to academic success with the right work ethic. Tutors for Grade Potential are trained to tap into those virtues and build them up, individually, in each of their clients.
