Land O’Lakes tutors were very excited when filming for the motion picture “Edward Scissorhands” took place in the subdivision Carpenter’s Run. The film was released in 1990 and starred Johnny Depp, Winona Ryder and Dianne West. The director of “Edward Scissorhands” was Tim Burton, his idea for the neighborhood in which the film is set was apparently drawn from the neighborhood where he himself grew up in Burbank, California. He also directed “Beetlejuice,” “Batman,” “Mars Attacks!” and “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.” Johnny Depp’s career was transformed due to this movie that rocketed him to fame, and he worked with Tim Burton over and over again on many projects including “Ed Wood,” “Sleepy Hollow,” and “Sweeney Todd.” Other recurring Tim Burton cast members include Helena Bonham Carter, Christopher Lee and Winona Ryder. Burton often works with Danny Elfman, who has composed the scores for almost all of his movies including “Edward Scissorhands.”
Many local areas were used for different elements of the production, for example the exterior shopping center shots were filmed in nearby Lakeland, FL, the plants and shrubs used came from Land O’Lakes and during filming the cast stayed at the golf and tennis resort “Saddlebrook Resort”. The homes in the neighborhood were modified slightly during filming so that they all looked uniform in their design. Any architectural elements that made the homes individual were altered, homes were all painted the same pastel ‘duck-egg blue’ color and windows of the houses were boarded up and painted over to create a monochromatic, and sterile cookie-cutter aesthetic. Land O’Lakes tutors say that when filming had been completed that the homes were again transformed back to how they were originally. so that the residents did not have to live in the pastel blue houses post filming.
In more recent news Land O’Lakes has been featured due to an ever expanding sink hole. Homes in the Lake Padgett Estates began falling into a sinkhole in July 2017, initially a couple of homes were condemned, but the hole continued to grow. Reports suggest that the sinkhole is not active but rather smaller sinkholes on the perimeter of the original sinkhole are becoming active due to seismic ripples caused by the weight of the sudden drop of soil and rocks into the earth. In order to repair the damage over one hundred truck loads of limestone were deposited into the hole which helped to stabilize the area while housing debris was removed. This is both a costly tragedy for the homeowners as well as the Pasco County Commission, which anticipated clean up costs to be over one million dollars.
