About Tampa
There are many reasons people give for keeping big cats in their home. Big Cat Rescue in Tampa, Florida, has heard all of them, and none are good. The non-profit organization rescues big cats—tigers, lions, bobcats, cougars, and more—and provides the best possible home they can in order to end the abuse of big cats and help prevent extinction.
Cats find their way to Big Cat Rescue for a myriad of reasons. Some cats were forced to perform in front of audiences. Some cats were kept as pets and became unmanageable as they grew. Others spent their lives performing and had no place to go after retiring. Sometimes baby cats needed to be rescued from the wild after hunters killed—accidentally or purposefully—the mothers. Other cats were rescued before being slaughtered for their coats.
Located on sixty-seven acres in the Citrus Park area of north Tampa, Big Cat Rescue is home to about eighty lions, tigers, bobcats, cougars. The organization not only provides a sanctuary for these cats, it also works hard to end the private trade and/or possession of exotic cats through legislation and education. The sanctuary offers several kinds of tours to educate the public. There are kids’ tours, private and group tours, feeding tours, nighttime tours, and photo tours. Schools and scouting organizations are welcome; Tampa tutors, teachers, and youth leaders can accompany their students on field trips to learn about these cats and what they need to live and thrive.
Big Cat Rescue is not the only place to see wild animals in Tampa. The city has numerous attractions for animal lovers, including the following:
Lowry Park Zoo: Rated number-one family friendly zoo in the United States in 2009 by Parents Magazine, Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo cares for more than 1,300 animals that live in the habitats of Florida, Australia, Asia, or Africa.
Florida Aquarium: The zoo is not the only award-winning animal attraction in Tampa. The Florida Aquarium is ranked one of the top ten aquariums in the country by TripAdvisor.com and one of the top five kid-friendly aquariums by Parents Magazine. The aquarium features the aquatic ecosystems and animals of Florida and around the world.
Busch Gardens Tampa: this African-themed animal park is home to more than 12,000 animals from 300 different species. The theme park also features coasters and other exciting rides for all ages as well as live entertainment—everything from animal shows to ice shows.
Tampa has a wide variety of animal attractions that are great for the whole family. Kids who arrange for tutoring in Tampa have even more time to “go wild” with the animals in Tampa.
