According to Bloomingdale tutors, Bloomingdale was once well known as being a destination for training teachers. The “Bloomingdale School” as it was known, evolved from being a regular school to a teacher’s institute. It’s first assistant principal from 1897-1899 was an Ethel Grimes Outland, it was very well respected and was the place that teachers were sent to, to study from all of the neighboring cities and villages. In the early days due to the school, Bloomingdale was ear marked for certain growth, but its development plateaued after the railway line was built and elected to be routed through nearby Brandon.
Ironically the development of a railway line and station in Brandon stopped Bloomingdale’s growth in its ‘tracks’. It made sense for local businesses and stores to set up near the railway station to make use of the extra passing trade that the railway station brought in. It also made sense according to Bloomingdale tutors, that Brandon would be a more convenient place to reside when commuting to work in Tampa, as it was now easier to get on the train directly from there. Suddenly attention was shifted to this nearby community, which then saw greater growth and eventually became a city. Bloomingdale remained a primarily residential community and is officially according to local governance, an ‘unincorporated census-designated place’ or CDP. Bloomingdale now mainly houses those who work in nearby Tampa. The development of the motorcar ensuring those who live in Bloomingdale now can successfully commute into the business center of Tampa.
The first settlers in Bloomingdale came to the area in 1850s, which was just after the Second Seminole War. Bloomingdale tutors often reference and educate students of the politics behind the three wars between the United States Army and the Native American tribes collectively known as the Seminoles. In the Second Seminole War the goal by the U.S Government was to have the Seminoles withdraw from the area completely. An agreement was drawn up and signed by both parties known as the “Treaty of Payne’s Landing”. This treaty overruled the previous agreement that the Seminoles would have their own reservation in the center of the Florida peninsula. Now with this new documentation the Seminoles were to leave Florida altogether and relocate west of the Mississippi. They claimed that they were forced to sign the agreement under duress, and a second uprising began against the U.S. Army to defend their land. The Seminoles killed one of the first settlers in Bloomingdale in the 1840s, John Carney, during the Third Seminole War in 1856.
