Locations > California > El Cajon

With a Spanish name that means “the box”, El Cajon is named after its location — a boxed in valley surrounded by mountains in Southern California. Located within the San Diego metropolitan area, El Cajon has access to all of San Diego’s big city amenities, while still enjoying life in the smaller city. The beauty that surrounds El Cajon is one of its biggest draws.
Since El Cajon is located further inland from San Diego, residents of El Cajon experience a greater variety in seasonal temperatures and weather patterns. Hotter in the summer, as well as cooler in the winter, El Cajon is nestled between beautiful mountains, creating a gorgeous backdrop. These mountains also provide great hiking trails, and plenty of park areas for exploration.
This history of the El Cajon region dates back long before the Spanish explorers landed here, establishing missions and rancheros. Rancheros were land grants, encouraging Spanish settlers to take large pieces of land. The term “rancheros” is actually where the modern word “ranch” comes from, though now it typically means a piece of land that is made for raising cattle, or other such livestock. The native tribes that lived here thrived, with the hospitable climate and fertile land. As Spanish missions popped up around what is now El Cajon, many of the native people converted to Catholicism. The cultural influences from both the Spanish people and the native people can be felt today in El Cajon.
The Mexican-American War was fought hard in what is now El Cajon, and the Americans were victorious. The land called “California” was now part of the United States. The gold rush that hit California in the mid to late 1800s drew in even more settlers and wealth-seekers.The city of El Cajon was established in the early 1910s, and its historic downtown district features modern shops and restaurants, as well as many older buildings that provide a glimpse into the city’s past.
The city of El Cajon is served by the Cajon Valley Unified School District, along with the Grossmont Union High School District. A number of elementary schools, middle schools, and high schools are available, providing a high quality public education. Several private schools and charter schools are available as well, providing parents with options when it comes to choosing what school is right for each child. For students that may need a little extra help, local El Cajon tutors are available. These tutors provide one-on-one guidance and help in a wide variety of subjects, helping each student reach their individual goals.
