    About Lemon Grove

Lemon Grove is a small city in Southern California, located within beautiful San Diego County. It might be best known for its huge lemon monument, known as “The World’s Biggest Lemon”, which is over a ton in weight and nearly ten feet in length. This sculpture sits adjacent to a local lemon grove, and on it is inscribed the city’s name, “Lemon Grove”, along with the date “1977”, when the city was incorporated.

When the Spanish explorers and missionaries arrived to the area that is now Lemon Grove, this land was dedicated to the Mission San Diego de Alcala. Southern California is known for its Spanish missions, most of which are still in some degree of operation today. When Mexico gained independence from Spain, land grants called rancheros were given out to encourage Mexican settlement in the area. One particular ranchero was owned by a man named Santiago Arguello; nearly sixty thousand acres of ranch land belonged to him, and this is the land that is now called Lemon Grove.

Why was this land eventually called “Lemon Grove”? Because of the perfect climate here in Southern California, citrus fruits grew well, and so many orchards were planted and harvested for decades. Lemon Grove got its name quite naturally. Of course, as the middle of the twentieth century saw a lot of suburbanization throughout Southern California, Lemon Grove saw many of its orchards turn into housing developments and freeways.

Families that live in Lemon Grove enjoy all of the family-friendly community events that take place here. A summer favorite, the Summer Concert Series is a free event that takes place at Berry Street Park. Bring a picnic lunch and enjoy music played by local artists. The Lemon Grove Day Camp provides a positive summer camp experience to kids from June through August. Each week, the Day Camp takes place at a new, fun location, providing a variety of fun activities, including laser tag, water park activities, swimming, and bowling.

Five public elementary schools and one middle school are located within Lemon Grove. For high school, students are sent to neighboring cities for their education. Lemon Grove School District provides high quality educational resources for primary students. For students that need extra help, local Lemon Grove tutors are available. These tutors can spend one-on-one time with each student to help in a wide range of subjects, assisting each child in reaching his or her educational goals.
