    About Escondido

Only about a half-hour drive from San Diego, Escondido is a beautiful city, rich in history and surrounded by gorgeous scenery. Escondido occupies a valley in the midst of hills decorated with rocky crags and tall, gorgeous trees. With a high quality of life, Escondido continues to experience growth, and families love living here. Escondido’s close proximity to San Diego provides easy access to all of San Diego’s wonderful big city amenities, and many people choose to live in Escondido and commute to work in San Diego.

In Spanish, the name “Escondido” means “hidden”, because of its location in a valley surrounded by hills. Originally, it was referred to as a hidden treasure, which makes sense, and anyone that lives here would agree. Long before Spanish explorers settled in this area, what is now the city of Escondido was occupied by the native people of this region, the Luiseno tribe. Other local tribes came through this area as well. When the late 1700s came around, the Spain took control of the area, pushing the natives out and establishing missions and rancheros. After the Mexican-American war, however, this land was won by the United States in the mid 1800s.

As is typical of Southern California cities in this region, Escondido enjoys a pleasant Mediterranean climate. This keeps temperatures pretty moderate year-round, and that makes living in Escondido very attractive to those who like mild weather. Even in the winter, the weather stays relatively warm.

One reason why families love living in Escondido is that residents have access to three beautiful local lakes. Dixon Lake, Lake Wohlford, and Lake Hodges all provide residents of Escondido with plenty of water-related activities and recreational outlets. Fishing is a very popular activity here, as both Dixon Lake and Lake Wohlford are stocked with fish for this very reason.

When it comes to education, Escondido has access to a number of school sin the Escondido Union School District, as well as the San Pasqual Union School District. Several public high schools are available to residents of Escondido, and numerous public elementary and middle schools provide high quality educations to students. There are also several private and charter schools that serve Escondido. For students that may need a little extra help, local Escondido tutors are available. These tutors can provide one-on-one assistance in a wide variety of subjects, helping each student reach their own personal educational goals.
