Point Loma Heights Tutors Come To You

Bordered by Ocean Beach to the west, Mission Bay to the north and Sunset Cliffs to the south, Point Loma Heights is a neighborhood on the Point Loma peninsula in San Diego. Initially discovered by Spanish explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo in 1542 it would be another 200 years before permanent Spanish settlement in what is now San Diego. Searching the California coast for what he believed to be a passage through the continent to the Gulf of Mexico, Cabrillo sailed into San Diego Bay only to have his hopes dashed. Because of the rolling hills and high cliffs, the Spanish named the peninsula La Punta de la Loma de San Diego (Hill Point) which was ultimately shortened to Point Loma. In the early 1800’s the Spanish established a port at La Playa (the beach) on the eastern coast of Point Loma. One of the oldest trails in California begins here and heads east to Mission San Diego de Alcalá. Once the United States acquired California after the U.S.-Mexico war, the U.S military, particularly the navy, started a long relationship with Point Loma and San Diego Bay. During World War II much of the peninsula was used for military purposes and off limits to civilians. After the war, one of the main thoroughfares in Point Loma Heights was named Nimitz Boulevard after Admiral Chester Nimitz who commanded the Pacific fleet in the war with Japan.

It’s likely that a Point Loma Heights tutor will be able to get you caught up on your toughest academic subjects so you can get out and enjoy the wonderful attractions and wealth of activities available at Point Loma Heights and the rest of the San Diego area. Sunset Cliffs Natural Park just south of Point Loma Heights is a 68-acre stretch of park on the Pacific Ocean. As its name suggests the park offers stunning sunsets along the coastal bluffs above the beach. Popular with surfers, the park features rocky cliffs, sea caves and panoramic views. The park is right next door to Point Loma Nazarene University, a Christian liberal arts college with over 3,500 students.

For history buffs, Point Loma Heights is across San Diego Bay from the USS Midway Museum. Named after the famous American victory at Midway Island during the early days of World War II, the USS Midway was the longest serving aircraft carrier in American history, built in 1945 and decommissioned in 1992. Over one million visitors a year come aboard to view a variety of exhibits. Displays include the officer’s and crew’s sleeping quarters, the bridge, pilot ready rooms and the ship’s galley. The museum also features interactive flight simulators such as Air Combat 360 which places participants in a heart pounding aerial combat ride complete with somersaults, loops and rolls.

Just a short walk from the Midway, the Maritime Museum of San Diego has one of the largest and most impressive collections of historic ships in the United States including the Star of India, a nineteenth century sailing vessel which has been excellently preserved. The museum hosts the annual Festival of Sail over Labor Day weekend. The festival turns San Diego Bay into a nautical theme park with more than twenty tall ships as well as other sea going vessels from around the world.
