South Park Tutors Come To You

Nestled within Balboa Park on the west, Interstate 15 on the east, North Park on the north, and Golden Hill on the south, the quaint, tree-lined neighborhood of South Park, San Diego, has a persona all of its own—thanks to a lot of friendly people and about seventy independently owned small businesses. The neighborhood’s website accurately describes the area as “a neighborhood crafted with heart.” Based on the neighborhood’s list of businesses, South Park’s version of crafting runs the gamut from chocolate to beauty services to beer—and everything in between.

Beer, in fact, is one of the things South Park is known best for. In 2009, Men’s Journal called San Diego the number-one beer town in America, and South Park’s 30th Avenue “easily the nation’s best beer boulevard.” Wandering along South Park’s main “downtown” areas (30th Avenue and Fern Street), visitors will find plenty of brewhouses, bars, and taverns.

Almost every type of shop, service, or restaurant is represented in South Park. Retail stores include vintage clothing, beach wear, antiques, home décor, handmade crafts, pottery, children’s clothing and products, bath and beauty products, jewelry, books, and gifts. Services include a dog wash, ceramic classes, art workshops, yoga classes, boutique gym facilities, skin care, waxing, beauty salons, a barber shop, and tattooing. For snacks, how do cold-pressed juices, organic produce, ice cream, coffee, and artisan chocolate sound? What a great place for a South Park tutor to get refreshed after an intense tutoring session or even to conduct tutoring in South Park! For larger meals, Mexican and Italian restaurants and casual lunch places dominate the restaurant scene, but there are plenty of other options, too.

One of the best ways to get to know everything South Park has to offer is to participate in its quarterly “walkabout,” a combination of strolling and shopping. Held in the evening, the South Park Walkabout showcases all of the neighborhood’s unique businesses, welcoming visitors with special deals, entertainment, and refreshments. Two main parts of the neighborhood are highlighted: the north end, which starts at 30th Street and Kalmia, and the south part, which starts at 30th Street and Beech Street. On the evening of the walkabout, an information booth at Juniper and 30th Street provides a walking guide that describes each shop and the specials it is offering.

Foodies who want to sample the restaurants, bars, and pubs but aren’t as keen on shopping should plan to attend the annual Taste of South Park. One admission price provides dozens of tastes from local restaurants. Another fun and family-friendly event is called Old House Fair. This street festival and garden tour brings together live music, artists, kids’ activities, craft beer and wine, food vendors, vintage home specialists, and local makers in celebration of the neighborhood’s historical roots.
