    About Clairemont

Clairemont in San Diego is a thriving community well in touch with the roots of the city and its earliest days. A 903-acre public park runs through Clairemont, referred to as Tecolote Canyon Natural Park, and has been preserved in much of its original state since San Diego’s founding. In 1977, the land was dedicated for this use, and ever since, visitors and residents alike have enjoyed access to a six-mile hilly hike through the community. The decision to conserve the area as a local park was a deliberate one, since in the 1970s, San Diego was experiencing a boom in housing and expansion. It would have been tempting to fill the canyon with homes, but Clairemont maintains and preserves this special part of the city with respect and dedication.

Prior to the settlement of San Diego, the Kumeyaay Indians lived in and around the canyon, finding food and resources to survive year after year. Tecolote, which means owl is Kumeyaay, is the given name for the park as it houses a particular variety of owls in its many trees. It is also home to snakes and other wildlife typical in the more rural parts of southern California. Visitors can bring dogs, bicycles, and either run, walk, or ride the trails found at Tecolote.

In addition to the experience of the trails, there is a nature center at Tecolote that explains further about the area’s history, vegetation, animals, and what visitors can do to preserve this quiet slice of nature in the middle of an otherwise-bustling city. Thanks to the nature center, visitors can know ahead of time of what to expect and what to look for during their time traversing the canyon. San Diego in general has a great variety of outdoor recreation, from sea to desert, but the payoff for these sort of activities comes when participants educate themselves ahead of time so they know what to do and what to anticipate of the experience. The saying may go that “fortune favors the brave,” but in reality, fortune favors the prepared, and Tecolote Canyon Natural Park is one resource of perhaps dozens that helps provide a necessary level of preparation for visitors.

Like the nature center at the canyon, tutors in Clairemont are there to inform, help, and guide their clients through the ups and downs of academic pursuits. They can warn against bad habits, advise the best methods to approach study skills, and impart a new appreciation for learning for each of the students they serve. Struggling students, who are unsure of the future and their potential for academic success, can always count on Grade Potential tutors to guide them on a path that results in improved grades and renewed self-confidence.
