Yorktown, New York is famous for many things—it’s upper-middle class demographics, its historical role in the Revolutionary War, and its charming suburban feel just outside of Manhattan. But to locals, it is perhaps most famous for Greasestock.

Greasestock is a yearly event put on by locals who are interested in renewable, non-fossil fuel energy. Originally founded in 2003, Greasestock began with eight individuals who came together to discuss the possibilities of using vegetable-based biodiesel to fuel vehicles. Informal, exciting, and full of possibility, this get-together turned into something far greater than the original eight could imagine. It came at an apt time, as an alternative to oil-based gasoline, vegetable fueled cars are ripe with potential for the future. Over the years, Greasestock has grown considerably; people from all over the New York area, and even other states, come to Yorktown to participate in exhibits on alternative energy.

Having a sustainable lifestyle is of the utmost importance to participators in Greasestock. This event has moved beyond its original scope of alternative fuels to include talks and exhibitions on green technology in general. This includes presentations on home heating alternatives and organic farming. At its center, however, are still vegetable fueled cars. Citizens from Mamaroneck have developed a garbage truck that runs on vegetable-based fuel. This alternative energy source, and its ensuing use, has saved the municipality at least ten thousand dollars, yearly.

In addition, the “veggie van” makes a yearly appearance at Greasestock. This is a project of V.O. Tech Inc., which is located in Mahpoac. The “veggie van” is fueled by the scraps and waste of a local restaurant in Mahpoac. Once their oils are extracted, the food scraps are composted in Yorktown’s Hanover Farm. This pattern of conservation and recycling has become a hallmark of Greasestock and its surrounding communities. The van is a symbol of what happens when talented, invested, and inventive minds come together to problem-solve.

Like Greasestock, Grade Potential started small and started local. Since then, it has grown across the United States to bring the promise of improved grades and academic performance to struggling students in different communities.
