    About Greenburgh

About 26 miles north of New York City on the Hudson River, Greenburgh, New York is in the western portion of Westchester County. It includes the villages of Dobbs Ferry and Tarrytown. Dutch and then English settlers began filtering into the Hudson River Valley not long after Henry Hudson discovered the river while looking for the Northwest Passage. Through purchase and outright war the European settlers drove the Native Algonquian people from the area throughout the 1600’s and early 1700’s. Established just after the Revolutionary War, Greenburgh probably takes its name from the Dutch word for grain because of early agricultural production in the region. It is in this area that New York writer Washington Irving set his famous story “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” about a timid schoolmaster named Ichabod Crane who runs afoul of the bully Brom Bones and the ghost of a Headless Horseman. It seems Ichabod very much wanted to marry Tarrytown girl Katrina Van Tassel, more for her father’s wealth than for her beauty. Of course, Brom is also interested in the young lady and so the climax of the story finds poor Ichabod face to face with the ghoul who unceremoniously hurls his severed head right into Ichabod’s face. Not surprisingly, Ichabod is never seen again in Tarrytown and Brom marries Katrina. Literary enthusiasts can tour the roads and bridges around recently restored Philipsburg Manor and may find them just as Irving described in his timeless tale. There’s even a marker indicating the spot of the Van Tassel homestead. Today, Greenburgh is an upscale community which receives an overall grade of A+ from the real estate website Niche with a median household income exceeding $115,000 a year.

A Greenburgh tutor will help you catch up on your most challenging academic subjects so you can take time away from the books to experience the many things to do in Greenburgh and the surrounding area. Built in the first half of the 19th century, Lyndhurst Mansion in Tarrytown is a masterpiece of Gothic Revival architecture. Over the years, different owners added to the splendor of the country villa near the Hudson River. The house’s second owner, New York merchant George Merritt doubled the house’s size using the original architect, Alexander Jackson Davis. The last owner of the property, railroad tycoon Jay Gould, kept the mansion in his family until 1961 when his daughter donated it to the public. Because of its Gothic origins, the mansion is highly romantic, like something out of Jane Eyre, with its exaggerated arches, vaulted ceilings and gloomy atmosphere. Lyndhurst can be visited from Thursday through Monday.

Chocolate manufacturer William Wallace built the Tarrytown Music Hall in 1885. The historic 843-seat hall has hosted such musical, political and cultural luminaries as Antonin Dvorak, Mae West and Woodrow Wilson. In 1980, the hall was purchased by the Friends of the Mozartina Musical Arts Conservatory. In recent years, the Friends have modernized and renovated the old hall so that in recent years it has featured artists such as B.B. King, Bonnie Raitt, Dave Brubeck and Greg Allman.

It’s just a short drive east from Greenburgh to Playland Amusement Park in Rye. Built in 1927, the park features the Dragon Coaster, one of only 100 wooden roller coasters still running in the United States. The Ice Casino, also built in 1929, is still in operation and has both a full floor for ice skating and dancing as well as a kiddie rink. The Grand Carousel, originally built in 1915 in New Haven, Connecticut, has an original band organ and 48 intricately painted horses.
