New Rochelle is the seventh largest city in New York State. In 2008, Bloomberg Businessweek magazine named New Rochelle the best city in New York State; and one of the best places in the country to raise children. In 2014, New Rochelle was voted the thirteenth best city to live in, out of five hundred and fifty cities to choose from. New Rochelle is also known for being one of the safest large cities in New York State, and the fifth safest city of its size, in the country. Perhaps the low crime rates are what make New Rochelle so popular. Today, the area is referred to as the Home Town, because most of the city is built up of single-family, residential developments. In fact, the amount of households in New Rochelle, surpasses the amount of households in six of the neighboring communities combined.

New Rochelle’s reputation of being a great place to raise a family, implies that the city contains many great family amenities. True to its reputation, the city has eight great outdoor park and recreational areas that include hiking, camping, beaches, lakes, wetlands, gardens, playgrounds, sports fields, a zoo, and museums. There are also several golf clubs, a tennis club, yacht club, and even a rowing club.

The New Rochelle Rowing Club, was founded in 1880, and is one of the oldest athletic organizations in the U.S. In fact, it was founded before the New York Rowing Association that it is now a part of; and its roots can be traced to the Harlem Regatta Association that dates back to 1866. The club won its first competition in 1886, and quickly found its place in the rowing community. During the 1880’s, rowing quickly became a very popular sport; and this excellent timing helped the New Rochelle Rowing Club’s Regatta attract over 1000 members and spectators. (A Regatta is a series of boat races, but refers mainly to rowing and sailing).

As the club grew in popularity, it began to expand, acquiring more boats and even more success. The team has seen many victories and won many titles throughout the decades, and even sent two members to the Olympics, where they won silver medals. Unfortunately, in recent years the clubhouse has deteriorated quite a bit. Superstorm Sandy caused a substantial amount of damage to the historic building, and many are still working to determine its fate. Despite the final outcome, the New Rochelle Rowing Club could tutor other sporting organizations in history, heritage, and excellence; as they have worked hard to promote their sport, and earn success since the day that the club was established.
