    About Port Chester

Port Chester, New York is a village in Westchester County. Port Chester was originally known as Saw Pit, because of the number of saw pits in the area. A saw pit was a hole in the ground built for workers to use pit saws. A pit saw was a two-man rip saw; a saw designed for making a “rip”cut in a piece of wood, cutting the wood parallel to the direction of the wood grain. Pit saws were used primarily in shipyards and other industries where workers did not have access to a sawmill. When using a pit saw, the log or piece of wood was laid across trestles that stood over a pit. One or two men would stand on the ground, while one or two men stood in the pit. The amount of operators depended on how difficult the wood would be to cut through. The men on top would push the pit saw down, and the men on bottom would push it back up, working the saw back and forth until the wood was cut. Pit saw operators were among the most highly paid laborers in North America, during the colonial time period. Port Chester would have utilized pit saws because, at that point,Port Chester was considered a major seaport.

Today, one of the most famous stops in Port Chester is Hubba’s, the local chili restaurant. The restaurant’s name was originally, “Texas Quick Lunch,” and served only basic chili and chili dogs. But in 1989, Pat Carta bought the restaurant and changed its name to Pat’s Hubba Hubba. When Carta took over the restaurant, he also expanded the menu to include different chili dishes like the popular chili cheese fries. Although Carta expanded the menu, he maintained the uncomplicated style that Texas Quick Lunch had originally established. The Chili contains zero vegetables, including beans. It is made up entirely of meat and seasoning. The drinks are also quite simple; Hubba’s offeres tap water with a little bit of fruit punch added to it. Frequenter’s might not visit Hubba’s for sophistication and variety, but they know what they’re getting, and always leave with a stomach full of warm chili. The restaurant could tutor other establishments in keeping things simple. In the nineties, the restaurant began to expand and today Hubba’s has several locations including one in Connecticut. The Port Chester location is now owned by Carlos Magan, and he shortened the restaurant’s name to Hubba’s. The name may have changed once again, but Hubba’s will always be Port Chester’s favorite spot to get that famous chili.
