    About Eastchester

About 27 miles north of New York City, Eastchester, New York in Westchester County includes the villages of Bronxville and Tuckahoe. Settled in the 1600’s, Eastchester received acknowledgement from Colonial Governor Richard Nicholls in 1664. About twenty years earlier, religious and women’s rights pioneer Anne Hutchinson and her children moved to Eastchester after the death of her husband. Hutchinson and her husband came to America from England seeking religious freedom but soon found that Massachusetts Bay Colony’s form of tolerance rendered women in a submissive role under the direction of church elders. Hutchinson eventually caused quite a controversy by suggesting that faith came from within and that individuals could discover that faith without direction from so called authorities of the Bible. For her efforts, she was put on trial and accused of heresy and sedition. In 1638 she was excommunicated and banished from Boston. For a time, she lived in the Rhode Island colony of Roger Williams but when her husband died she settled in what was then called New Netherland. Unfortunately, Anne came to the area during a time of strife between colonists and Native Americans. Despite being warned of an impending attack by the Siwanoy, Anne and her family did not leave, maybe because she had experienced good relations with natives in Rhode Island. The Siwanoy, who had been brutally treated by the Dutch, were in no mood for friendship and slaughtered the entire family and then burned down their house. Eventually, through purchase and war the Dutch and English settlers of Westchester County drove out most of the natives who had once called the area home. Today, Eastchester is an affluent suburb which receives an overall grade of A from the real estate website Niche and has a median household income exceeding $105,000 a year.
