Eastchester Tutors Come To You

About 27 miles north of New York City, Eastchester, New York in Westchester County includes the villages of Bronxville and Tuckahoe. Settled in the 1600’s, Eastchester received acknowledgement from Colonial Governor Richard Nicholls in 1664. About twenty years earlier, religious and women’s rights pioneer Anne Hutchinson and her children moved to Eastchester after the death of her husband. Hutchinson and her husband came to America from England seeking religious freedom but soon found that Massachusetts Bay Colony’s form of tolerance rendered women in a submissive role under the direction of church elders. Hutchinson eventually caused quite a controversy by suggesting that faith came from within and that individuals could discover that faith without direction from so called authorities of the Bible. For her efforts, she was put on trial and accused of heresy and sedition. In 1638 she was excommunicated and banished from Boston. For a time, she lived in the Rhode Island colony of Roger Williams but when her husband died she settled in what was then called New Netherland. Unfortunately, Anne came to the area during a time of strife between colonists and Native Americans. Despite being warned of an impending attack by the Siwanoy, Anne and her family did not leave, maybe because she had experienced good relations with natives in Rhode Island. The Siwanoy, who had been brutally treated by the Dutch, were in no mood for friendship and slaughtered the entire family and then burned down their house. Eventually, through purchase and war the Dutch and English settlers of Westchester County drove out most of the natives who had once called the area home. Today, Eastchester is an affluent suburb which receives an overall grade of A from the real estate website Niche and has a median household income exceeding $105,000 a year.

An Eastchester tutor will help you catch up on your most challenging academic subjects so you can take time away from the books to experience the many things to do in Eastchester and the surrounding area. Twin Lakes Park offers many of the usual recreational amenities including hiking, fishing and winter sports. It is also a premier equestrian center in Westchester County with more than 100 stalls, two indoor arenas, four outdoor arenas and several miles of trails. For serious competitors, Twin Lakes offers dressage teams, horse shows and trail riding. Twin Lakes trails also travel into nearby Nature Study Woods in New Rochelle.

The Westchester Italian Cultural Center in Tuckahoe offers language classes, cooking seminars and a variety of cultural activities. The center is dedicated to Italian born Generoso Pope who came to America in 1906 and was soon involved in local politics as a newspaper publisher and political activist. Culinary classes are geared toward all ages and teach participants the fundamentals of Italian cuisine. Language classes are also open to all ages and have several levels from beginners to advanced speakers and readers. The center includes an extensive travel program with annual trips to various parts of Italy.

Just a few miles south from Eastchester, Playland Amusement Park in Rye has been entertaining kids and adults since 1927. Built in 1929 the Dragon Coaster is one of only 100 wooden roller coasters still running in the United States. The Ice Casino, also built in 1929 is still in operation and has both a full floor for ice skating and dancing as well as a kiddie rink. The Grand Carousel, originally built in 1915 in New Haven, Connecticut, has an original band organ and 48 intricately painted horses.
