One such settlement was Stony Hill. The Society of Friends, as the Quakers are officially known, made modern Silver Lake Preserve their home for some time, and today, the ruins of Stony Hill are still standing. At one point, more than twenty homes were constructed by the Quakers, who lived there through the early twentieth century. They paved roads with cobblestones and built a community that endured for years. Today, visitors have the opportunity to see the ruins of the Stony Hill settlement when they visit the Preserve, or arrive for a short nature walk.

The preserve spans 236 acres and is densely wooded, with streams and meadows dotting the terrain. A 1.8-mile loop, or lollipop hike, affords hikers a simple walk to take in the beauty of the preserve. Some of the topography could be considered rugged, as steep rock outcroppings are a feature of the scenery, but Silver Lake Preserve is generally reported as an easy walk by visitors of all ages and abilities.

Since 1925, Silver Lake Preserve has been a much-needed place of natural beauty, as a result of White Plains’ suburban sprawl and nearby Manhattan’s urban noise. It represents a return to the past, to preternatural identity, and offers refuge to the beleaguered city-dweller.
