    About Mount Pleasant

Mount Pleasant, New York is a town made up of several smaller communities. One of the communities in Mount Pleasant, is Pleasantville, the original hometown of Reader’s Digest.
Reader’s Digest is a general interest family magazine, that has been in publication since 1922. Today, Reader’s Digest has a global circulation of 10.5 million and is the largest paid circulation magazine in the world. The magazine reaches forty million people outside of the U.S., and is sold in over seventy countries through forty-nine editions, in twenty-one different languages.

Reader’s Digest was created by DeWitt Wallace, who came up with the idea while recovering from shrapnel wounds he received serving in WWI. His idea was simply to collect all of his favorite articles from different magazines and combine them into one. If need be, he would condense or rewrite the articles to fit the new magazine. Wallace’s instincts for what the public wanted to read, lead him quickly to great success. By 1929, Reader’s Digest has over 290,000 subscribers, and brought in a gross income of $900,000 a year. That is a far cry from Wallace’s original goal of $5,000.

With so much success in the U.S., expanding to other countries was the next natural move. The first edition of Reader’s Digest to leave the States, went to the U.K. in 1938. By 1962, the fortieth anniversary of Reader’s Digest, there were forty international editions in thirteen different languages. But the magazine was not only circulating in other countries, it was thriving. At that time, it was the largest circulating journal in Canada, Mexico, Spain, Sweden, Peru, and others; and the international circulation was at 23 million. The magazine could have tutored other circulations in what consumers wanted to read, but then they might have lost some of their own business. Back at home, Reader’s Digest was the best selling consumer magazine for some time, but in 2009, it lost out to Better Homes and Gardens. However, the magazine has remained popular, and has has many faithful subscribers across the U.S.

In addition to the regular publications, Reader’s Digest has released special editions including the bi-monthly series called Reader’s Digest Select Editions. The original name of the collection was Reader’s Digest Condensed Books. The select series was a softcover anthology featuring four or five condensed versions of best selling novels. In the seventies, there was also the Reader’s Digest Press, which provided full-length original non-fiction works. Reader’s Digest has maintained a steady following over the decades and can be found in many homes and office buildings all over the world. Wallace’s instincts lead him to produce a journal that would influence print media for generations. Some ideas start small, but you never know where they might lead.
