    About Westchester

For the millions of people who live in New York—as in New York City, and its surrounding boroughs, suburbs, and county—water is of the utmost importance. But how is it provided to its residents? The New Croton Reservoir, in Westchester, provides the water supply for the county, and has done so since the mid nineteenth century.

Croton is a natural reservoir, and was originally called Croton Lake in 1842 when it was adapted for New York City’s water use. Over the years, the reservoir has expanded to accommodate growing populations, and as result, is the largest watershed of the water system that serves New York. With some damming and water channeling, New Croton’s potential to sustain the life found on the island of Manhattan and its surrounding communities has made this reservoir one worth a second look and a discussion.

New Croton serves as a collecting point for all other water in the system and is nine miles long and holds 19 billion gallons at any given time. Bridges traverse its span, connecting one edge of the perimeter with the other, and its overall appearance is idyllic and charming. The industrial supply of pipes and aqueducts that lead to the urban feel of the city it serves is a stark contrast to the serene shores of the reservoir and the depths that it meets. It is hundreds of feet deep to accommodate the billions of gallons it holds at maximum capacity.

Reservoirs store up water before it is funneled away for sanitation and filtration. During droughts and other natural disasters, water supplies are often threatened, especially if levels dip too low. Protecting water levels and the areas surrounding reservoirs ensures their endurance through dry seasons, and preparing for natural disasters is another way cities protect their water supply at all times.

Grade Potential tutors in Westchester store up the knowledge and know-how to be effective with each of the students they work with. No matter how bad grades may be, or how much a client may be struggling, tutors are there to have their depths plumbed for new and better study habits, practice at learning, and other effective academic skills necessary to find success. In many cases, they are the lifeline that turns things around for the student who has experienced setback after setback, just as the reservoir supplies life-sustaining substance to millions of people.
