    About Frederick

As the second largest city in Maryland, Frederick is a community that is rich in history and full of vibrant residents with a high quality of living. Surrounded by beautiful mountains, creeks and tributaries can be found throughout Frederick, creating a beautiful, lush landscape.

Long before European settlers arrived to the area, the region that now encompasses Frederick was once tribal land for many Native Americans. With many rivers and creeks in the area, tribes followed these waterways as they hunted throughout the area for food and materials for clothing. White explorers arrived in the area in the mid 1700s, surveying the land to see what it would be best used for. Its location close to the Monocacy River provided excellent transportation and shipping access.

As an area that saw much conflict and chaos during the Civil War, Frederick was a city that many African American slaves traveled through in search of freedom. Maryland was considered to be a “slave state”, though both sides of the war stationed in different areas of the city of Frederick. An interesting museum now resides in Frederick, the National Museum of Civil War Medicine, and commemorates the hospitals for wounded Civil War soldiers located within Frederick.

Since Frederick is located within the Washington D.C. metropolitan area, the local economy reaps many benefits. Fort Detrick, an army facility, is Frederick’s top employer, providing jobs for over ten thousand residents. Many different corporations and businesses thrive in Frederick. Smaller shops, tourist destinations, and restaurants can be found in Frederick’s Historic District in the downtown area. Known for its diverse cuisine selection, Frederick attracts many tourists with this fun downtown area.

Families that live in Frederick love the local parks and recreational facilities. With many green spaces and nature paths throughout the city, many residents enjoy being outdoors and participating in healthy activities throughout the city. Large, beautiful trees can be found around all of the city park areas, and large water features and fountains add to the natural beauty of Frederick.

With a highly rated school system, families feel good about enrolling their children in the local schools in Frederick. A selection of both public and private schools provides families with a number of options for their kids. For students that require a little extra help in their schooling, additional resources are available, such as local tutors. Sometimes, one-on-one help is all it takes to get students on schedule with their academic goals.
