The people of California have been categorized into the following stereotypes: movie actor, pop star or some kind of singer, a hippie who enjoys yoga, and a surfer. Shell Beach, a neighborhood of Pismo Beach, began just as that, an oasis for the city worker. Most who have come to Shell Beach and the Pismo area fall in love and transform into a laid back surfer. Floyd Calvert purchased land which included Shell Beach with the intention of selling it to people as a retreat from the sweltering valley. In 1926, Calvert bought and developed most of the land. After World War II, Calvert began to sell most of the land to war veterans who decided they wanted to stay in the area after being there for their military training. Shell Beach then flourished into the beach town it is today.

This quiet beach town is ideally located amongst many other towns just like it. The entire area is filled with activities to enjoy from wine tasting to surfing and always there is amazing food. If you have always wondered what it was like to “hit the waves” this is the perfect place to start. Locals are friendly so you never have to worry about stealing someone's wave, there's plenty of room. Plenty of surf shops are near the pier to get you prepared for the colder waters here. They offer wetsuit and board rentals, beginner surf lessons and even a suggestion on where to go for lunch. A tutor in your area can help you with school work so you can hit the waves. Pismo and its neighboring beaches are known to be the “clam capital of the world”. The areas over abundance of clams had them get creative and perfect the art of clam chowder. After you hit the salty waves, sit in a local favorite restaurant to enjoy a fresh serving of chowder in a warm, toasty bread bowl.

This beach town isn't too far from the wine country just 30 minutes north of it. You can taste the vine in the salty air not far from Shell Beach. Wine Enthusiast Magazine recognizes a wine bar in Pismo as one of its top 20 wine bars in the United States. The wine bar offers over a thousand different bottles to its customers. And who says the wine needs to be expensive? In the Pismo and Shell Beach area, about six tastings can cost you about $15. These are only a few of the many activities that are offered near Shell Beach. No matter your taste or interests, there is something for you in Shell Beach. All you need to do is sink your toes in the sand and just breathe.
