Creston according to Creston tutors is a small farming community that was founded back in 1884. Today’s “Windfall Farms” was once known as the “Cardiff Stud Farm” and was previously owned by the famous “Jeopardy” game show host Alex Trebek. He sold the farm in 2008, but owned the farm for many years since the mid nineties. One of the most famous residents was his $130,000 horse “Reba’s Gold” whose best racing class achieved was “Graded Stakes Winner”. Comically, the horse was notorious for not competing well when Trebek was present at the race, and he became known as a bad luck charm come race day. During his career “Reba’s Gold” managed to successfully win 8 races, and garnered seven hundred and seventeen thousand dollars in prize money (according to Equibase.) His last appearance was at the San Diego Handicap in August 2004 when he came in fourth. During the race he sustained a muscle injury, and was then retired.
Trebek ended up selling the farm in Creston to an investment banker from nearby Paso Robles who had been interested in sometime with investing in thoroughbred racing. Windfall Farms as it is known now, consists of over 724 acres, and bills itself as “a Kentucky-style Thoroughbred farm in California.” It is also very popular as a wedding reception venue for couples choosing the Central Coast as the area to take their vows.
In more recent years the community of Creston according to Creston tutors was made officially an “American Viticultural Area.” This means that it has been designated as a grape-growing region for fine wine. This title is granted by the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB) and given at the request of the wineries. Before this system was in place the area or ‘appellation’ written on the wine bottle label would have been based on state or county boundaries. Now, a wine region can extend beyond state lines or in stark contrast be very small, confined within a very limited boundary. This boundary would only be recognized by the TTB. The Creston District AVA’s existence came about after the Paso Robles AVA split into eleven new distinct areas due to their differing microclimates. The district is just less than fifty thousand acres in size and houses numerous notable vineyards including “Chateau Margene” and “Creston Vineyard 85”. The elevation of the land is constant throughout the AVA varying between 1000 feet max, and the soil is rich with nutrients as it is an old erosional plateau at the bottom of “La Panza Range.”
