From Cowtown to booming wine country. Paso Robles made its start as “California’s oldest watering place” since 1795. The native Salinan Indians knew the area for its natural hot springs before the missions came into the area. Two decades later 146 million tons were harvested and in 1970 more almonds were exported to West Germany than the entire harvested production in 1940. In 1922 an almond processing and storage facility was built to hold the abundance of almonds. The building was conveniently built right on the railroad for exporting. Now, the building still stands as a historic site. It stood empty and rundown for nearly 30 years until Derby Wine Estates purchased and turned it into a winemaking facility. This Farmer’s Alliance Building now suits the wine country surrounding it.

Almond orchards are still seen throughout the Paso Robles area. Only a few can still be seen producing almonds. Grape Vineyards began to take off in the 1960’s and 1970’s and the town took off with it. But cattle can still be seen from five head of cattle to hundreds of head, it seems cattle will always graze Paso’s hills. Most of these cattle ranches have evolved into a cattle ranch and winery.
