    About Paso Robles

From Cowtown to booming wine country. Paso Robles made its start as “California’s oldest watering place” since 1795. The native Salinan Indians knew the area for its natural hot springs before the missions came into the area. These hot springs brought in pioneers for the area who soon bought large lots of land for cattle ranches along with large farms. Downtown Paso included a park and a hotel which surrounded the hot mineral springs that attracted the rich and famous from across the country. Today, the hotel still stands and Paso is a bustling large town made to accommodate the tourists who come from all over for its wineries.

Before grape vineyards, the hills were covered in almond orchards. Rather than being called the new wine country of California, Paso was once the “Almond City”. From early 1900’s up into the 1970’s, Paso was the largest almond producing area in the world. Following World War II 14 million tons of almonds were harvested. Two decades later 146 million tons were harvested and in 1970 more almonds were exported to West Germany than the entire harvested production in 1940. In 1922 an almond processing and storage facility was built to hold the abundance of almonds. The building was conveniently built right on the railroad for exporting. Now, the building still stands as a historic site. It stood empty and rundown for nearly 30 years until Derby Wine Estates purchased and turned it into a winemaking facility. This Farmer’s Alliance Building now suits the wine country surrounding it.

Almond orchards are still seen throughout the Paso Robles area. Only a few can still be seen producing almonds. Grape Vineyards began to take off in the 1960’s and 1970’s and the town took off with it. But cattle can still be seen from five head of cattle to hundreds of head, it seems cattle will always graze Paso’s hills. Most of these cattle ranches have evolved into a cattle ranch and winery. The Hearst family is worldly known, especially their infamous Hearst Castle. A tutor in your area can help you finish your school works faster to enjoy what Paso has to offer. Now they have their own cattle ranch gone winery in Cholame just outside of Paso Robles. Zinfandel wine grapes were the first to be produced in the Paso area and still remains as one of the most popular. More than 40,000 vineyard acres and over 200 wineries are now in Paso Robles. Multiple times Paso has been named the best wine regions in the west, above the notable Napa Valley.

At one time, downtown Paso streets were filled with old ranch trucks with their farmers in tow. Grain tanks were filled to the brim on their backroads. Almond trees grew up and shaded its fruitful ground. Now, wineries and tasting rooms are speckled throughout its downtown, outskirts and everywhere in between. People around the world are attracted to Paso’s wine country. No matter the commodity they are in, Paso will persevere to be the absolute best.
