Can you really see bears in Los Osos? After all, the Spanish named it the Valley of the Bears. Well, there is a bear on a surfboard, with a paddle in its hand, in Los Osos’s old town area, beside the pier. It’s a Cow-Bear, bear from waist upward and cow, from waist down, sort of a Hollywood star. The Cow-Bear has sunglasses, a smiley face, a butterfly perched on his eyebrow, and statuesquely represents the spirit of the area.
Los Osos, which means the bears in Spanish, is a spiffy small town, a “heaven” of sorts to many of its people, often calling it that name.
Situated on the Estero Bay, it’s got loads to offer: sea and sun, cows and farmland to the east, bears in the mountains, is a monarch butterfly roost, with three nature preserves, two nearby state parks and the famous Morro Rock national monument. Plus — it’s got good schools, a library, and is just 10 miles to San Luis Obispo, a quaint big city of sorts, with both a community and state college.
What all of this means to the student is simply – the word: Ahoy! WOW. What an opportunity it is to get a first class education, from kindergarten onward, in San Luis Coastal, one of the highest performing school districts in the state. Nearby Cuesta Community College is close enough to bicycle to from home, and offers a free first year to recent high school graduates. There are loads of nifty certificate programs, two year degrees, and over 40% of the graduating students applying to San Luis Obispo’s famous Cal Poly Campus, are accepted. County students are like family; they get serious consideration. What a break!
Now, here is the only catch. You do have to study. Know how to do that? If not, don’t worry; Grade Potential Tutors are on hand to teach you study skills. Soar on your strengths and get a little help for your challenges: testing taking skills, algebra, English, or how about essay tests.
Los Osos is a quiet and easy going community, for the scholarly hours. Then, why not hop out of your desk, traipse down the streets of town, and stop off at the sea. Catch a kayak at the pier, or skip through Sweet Springs Nature Preserve, noting ducks in the ponds and a heron walking the mudflats by the sea bay view.
Then, go back and study some more. Master the basics, elementary school onward. Just start out with the A, B, C’s and get some tutoring help if counting one to a thousand is a challenge. You might break to the Elfin Forest to visit with the pigmy oaks, most under ten feet tall, or sprint to see the two to four hundred year old lofty oak trees fed by a flowing stream. That’s what getting a little survival help can do, as you reach to your dreams in the Valley of the Bears.

Families share goals and scheduling preferences through a short intake. That information becomes a learner profile. Grade Potential then introduces your profile to a professional independent tutor whose background aligns. Once the tutor accepts, you’re introduced directly and sessions can begin.
Our packages are highly customizable based on your budget, preferred session cadence, time frame, location, and a few other factors. You’ll be presented with clear pricing before you begin. We support families in choosing the session length and cadence that works best for their individual situation; no hard sales tactics and no obligation to purchase a long-term package.
Typically within 2-3 business days, depending on subject, location, and schedule availability. Urgent timelines are noted in your profile so introductions prioritize your timing.
In-person at home or another convenient, quiet, safe location (like the local library). When families need flexibility, online sessions are also available.
Experienced, professional independent tutors with strong subject knowledge and a track record of working one-on-one with students. Many hold degrees in their fields; some are certified teachers or graduate students with specialized expertise.
Yes—safety is our top priority. Tutors complete screening through Simpliverified background checks, consistent with local requirements and platform standards.
Just let Grade Potential know. Your profile can be introduced to a different tutor at no cost to you, and once accepted, you’ll be re-introduced so sessions continue without losing momentum.
Support spans elementary through college across all core subjects (math, reading, writing, science, languages) plus test prep (e.g., SAT/ACT, AP, GRE) and many electives. If it’s taught in school, there’s likely a tutor with relevant experience. Adult learners can also benefit from tutoring services in a wide variety of subjects.
Most families choose 60-90 minute sessions 1-2 times per week. Cadence and length are set directly with the tutor to fit the student’s goals, pace, and schedule.
Often, yes! Especially when goals and levels are similar. There’s no additional cost for siblings to share sessions, so feel free share details in your intake so we can advise on the right tutoring package for you.
