    About Avila Beach

In recent years the Avila Beach Pier has become popular not only for it’s beautiful southerly views but also as great vantage point for “Whale watching.”

“Whale watching” has been a popular recreational activity for many years however more recently it has seen rapid growth with many companies capitalizing on the millions of tourists that travel to the coast annually, predominantly in order to see the whales and catch them during their migrating season. The earliest recorded organized “whale-watching” venture was in San Diego in 1950. According to Avila Beach tutors, the Cabrillo National Monument was declared a public venue for observing gray whales, and all of a sudden thousands of visitors turned up. It was unexpectedly popular and caused other nearby outposts to do the same. Visitors were happy to pay a small fee in order to reach the better vantage points via boats and soon a new monetized tourist attraction was born.

The dense population of humpback whales in New England meant a sighting of a humpback was very likely during a trip to the east coast, especially as they are known to jump out of the water and perform acrobatic flips. So for a long time, within the U.S. the east coast became the go to destination for avid whale watchers. The “whale-watching” craze extends beyond that of the United States and is a big revenue generator in Canada as well as in many developing countries. This has led to the happy side effect of a bid to up the protection and conservation of the species that have endured depletion in numbers over the years due to commercial fishing and hunting ventures.

According to Avila Beach tutors, in Avila Beach the main draw for whale watching at the pier there is the possibility of seeing gray and humpback whales. Gray whales migrate annually and are not confined to the Pacific Ocean they have been spotted in the Mediterranean too. They are the only surviving descendants of the filter-feeding whales that date back to over 30 million years ago, this species is known in the scientific community as Eschrichtiidae. The easier to pronounce “Gray” or “Grey” Whale are so called simply because of the colored patches of gray on their skin which makes them easy to spot by whale watching enthusiasts and beginners alike. In comparison the humpback whales are distinctive because of their shape. They too are common in many seas and oceans around the world and their origins date back to about the same time as when chimpanzees and apes arose. One of the most spectacular moments to witness is the mesmerizing mating song of the male humpback whale, which they repeat for hours at a time and can be heard from miles away.
