    About La Habra

If you’ve been meeting with your La Habra tutor, then you know that California used to belong to Mexico. Large plots of land were granted to ranchers back then, and were used mostly for cattle ranches. These ranches were worked hard, and the lifestyle was not for the faint of heart.

The city of La Habra in California actually started as a large seven-thousand-acre ranch, named Rancho Canada de La Habra. The ranch was originally owned by Don Mariano Reyes Roldan who was granted the land in the 1700’s. The land functioned as a successful cattle ranch for quite a while, until the mid 1800’s when the ranch was sold to Abel Stearns.

Times were even tougher for cattle ranchers then. The climate of California was new and foreign, and unlike the ranchers that had been there before them the terrain was unknown, and in order to get the money they needed from the cattle, they first had to get the cattle to the points of sale. This was no easy feat. Cowboys would use horses and as many hired hands as they could afford to move very large herds of cattle across miles and miles of unforgiving terrain. It was hard job that required a certain kind of person. Many variables out of their control made the trek dangerous and highly volatile.

It seemed luck as a cattle ranch had run out for Rancho Canada de La Habra, as heavy flooding that was followed by a very severe drought brought many ranchers to bankruptcy. The weather conditions were harsh, and the damage to the land followed by the loss of water made ranching impossible for many.

So, Rancho Canada de La Habra was sectioned off and sold to many different families. Some came by railway, while other came via wagons. Among the first settlers was actually the Milhous family, the grandparents of our 32nd president, Richard Nixon. Everyone came in hopes of settling untamed lands. Early settles still battled with the drought conditions, however water lines were soon created that allowed water to travel from the San Gabriel River. Many made a living off of growing grain at first, but with the addition of these waterways there was a big boom in avocados, citrus, and walnuts.

Nixon actually opened his first law office in La Habra, and perhaps this help put the city on the map. Today La Habra is a bustling suburb, with access to everything including wonderful La Habra tutors.
