    About Gladstone

Nicknamed the “Home of the Pow-Wow Tree,” Gladstone, Oregon is only eight miles southeast of downtown Portland. The nickname comes from the maple tree where the Native American Clackamas and Multnomah tribes gathered to trade, settle community problems and even perform wedding ceremonies. The tree still stands on Clackamas Boulevard in Gladstone. European-American settlers started arriving in the 1840’s and 1850’s. After the Civil War, real estate pioneer and lawyer Harvey David Cross officially founded the city, naming it after English statesman William Gladstone who served as British Prime Minister four times during the reign of Queen Victoria. Cross was a Clackamas County judge and state senator. In 1882 he purchased the house previously built and owned by one of the earliest settlers of the area Fendel Cason. The Cason-Cross House still stands on Arlington St. and is the oldest house in Gladstone. Along with surveyor Sydney Smith, Cross planned the city on a grid with streets running east and west named for American colleges and universities such as Harvard and Cornell. Streets running north and south took the names of English royalty like Gloucester and Hereford.

A Gladstone tutor will be able to keep you ahead of the academic curve so you can take time out to experience the many things to do in Gladstone and the greater Portland metropolitan area. For history buffs, there are several museums chronicling the history of Oregon in the Gladstone area. The Museum of the Oregon Territory is in nearby Oregon City. It features exhibits covering 10,000 years of history, offering a glimpse into the life of the early Native Americans as well as the American settlers who crossed the continent on the Oregon Trail. The John Tigard House Museum takes visitors back to the history of second half of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th. Wilson Tigard settled in Oregon in 1852 near what is now the city which bears his name. His house was built in 1880 for his son and was the family home until 1946. It was acquired by the Tigard Historical Museum in 1978 and turned into a museum open to the public.

For nature enthusiasts, the area around Gladstone offers ample opportunities for outdoor recreation. At over 11,000 feet, Mt. Hood is the tallest peak in Oregon and draws thousands of visitors each year for summer and winter activities. In the winter, opportunities for skiing, snowboarding, tubing and snowmobiling are plentiful. In the summer, Mt. Hood has a hiking or biking trail for every experience level. Likewise, climbing at Mt. Hood is available for all skill levels with indoor rock walls, outdoor bouldering and high-altitude mountaineering. For a more leisurely experience, Mt. Hood also offers both golf and disc golf courses. The Resort at The Mountain features a 27-hole course with picturesque views of the mountain.

For those who care to venture into the big city, the Portland Japanese Garden overlooks the city on 12 acres with a realistic Japanese tea house, bubbling streams, quiet walkways and an outstanding view of Mt. Hood. The garden is so excellent that the Japanese ambassador to the United States proclaimed it to be “the most beautiful and authentic Japanese garden in the world outside of Japan.”
