    About Happy Valley

Passed in 1850 by the United States Congress, the Donation Land Claim Act drew thousands of settlers to the Oregon Territory for free land and a new life. Pioneers like Christian and Matilda Deardorff took the government up on their offer, traversed the Great Plains and ultimately settled on 640 acres in what is now Happy Valley, Oregon in 1851. The Deardorffs apparently lived long and prosperous lives with Christian passing away in 1884 followed by Matilda in 1891. Both are buried in the Christilla Pioneer Cemetery on Scouter’s mountain. The community originally came to be known for a while as Deardorff Valley and later Christilla Valley (a combination of Christian and Matilda) until the early 1900’s when the first reference to the name Happy Valley appeared in real estate advertisements. Historians have surmised that land sellers preferred the name Happy Valley. Whatever the name, the town began as a farming community and remained such until well after World War II.

A Happy Valley tutor can keep you quite content with your academic progress in the toughest classes so you can enjoy the things to do in Happy Valley and the rest of the Portland metropolitan area. Centrally located Happy Valley Park offers several recreational activities. The park includes 56 acres of wetlands, picnic areas, walking trails, playgrounds and a splash pad complete with 16 water sprays which kids will love. Throughout Happy Valley and its outskirts there are 18 miles of hiking trails taking in scenic views and woodlands. Hikers will be able to catch glimpses of Mt. Adams, Mt. St. Helens and Mt. Hood. Mt. Scott Nature Park has 23 acres and two miles of winding trails. To get a view of the community below, visitors and residents alike can climb Scouter’s Mountain, an extinct volcano, and picnic, check out trees which are up to 200 years old and catch scenic views of nearby Mt. Hood.

For winter fun, Happy Valley is about an hour away from Timberline Lodge in the Mt. Hood wilderness. Not only is Timberline Lodge a ski lodge and mountain resort but it is also one of Oregon’s top tourist attractions with nearly two million visitors each year. Built by the WPA during the Great Depression and dedicated by President Franklin Roosevelt in 1937, the lodge is a National Historic Landmark. The Timberline was used in the filming of Stanley Kubrick’s horror movie The Shining, gleaned from the Stephen King novel and starring Jack Nicholson. In fact, the infamous Room 217 is the most requested room in the hotel.

Residents of Happy Valley benefit from their proximity to Portland. As the largest city in Oregon, Portland offers many worthwhile activities and attractions. The Oregon Museum of Science and Industry in downtown Portland is ranked as a top science center in the United States and is known for its innovative displays and educational programs. One of the most popular attractions at the museum is the USS Blueback, a non-nuclear submarine built in the 1950’s. Museum visitors are welcome to come aboard the submarine which was featured in the 1990 movie The Hunt for Red October.
