    About Sherwood

Regarded by real estate websites as one of Portland’s best suburbs, Sherwood, Oregon is a quiet, residential community situated in the Tualatin Valley about 17 miles southwest of the big city. Originally named Smockville after city founder J.C. Smock, the town’s name was changed in 1892 to Sherwood by prominent businessman Robert Alexander who likened the wooded area around Sherwood to the legendary English forest where Robin Hood robbed from the rich and gave to the poor. With the coming of the railroad in 1885 Sherwood began shipping products north and the town’s brickyard supplied much of the material for construction in rapidly growing Portland. With prosperity came many new commercial buildings such as saloons, blacksmith shops, livery stables and hotels. Even after the brickyard closed, victim of a devastating fire, the town continued to thrive primarily because of the rich farmland in the surrounding countryside. Over the years Sherwood has continued to grow slowly and in recent years has garnered national recognition. In 2009, Family Circle Magazine chose Sherwood as one of America’s most “family-friendly” small towns. In 2013, Money Magazine rated Sherwood in the top ten of the best 50 places to live in America.

It’s certain that a Sherwood tutor will keep you ahead of the academic curve so you can take time to enjoy the fun activities in Sherwood and the rest of the Portland metropolitan area. Fittingly, one of Sherwood’s most popular annual events is the Robin Hood Festival and International Archery Tournament held in July. The festival, not unlike Renaissance festivals throughout the United States, offers Sherwood residents and visitors live entertainment on three stages, medieval reenactments, castle building and knighting ceremonies. In its 64th year, the festival is one of the oldest and most unique community gatherings in Oregon. Robin Hood and his merry men, Maid Marian and her court as well as other costumed actors bring alive the ancient days of yore in the streets of Old Town Sherwood. The festival also features an international archery competition between archers from Sherwood and archers from Nottingham, England.

For nature lovers, the Tualatin River National Wildlife Refuge in Sherwood features over 1,800 acres of wetlands and lowlands natural sanctuaries. Visitors will be able to catch glimpses of native and migratory birds such as herons, bald eagles and several species of hawks and owls. Mammals in the refuge include wolves, foxes, deer, weasels and raccoons. The refuge offers abundant opportunities for photography along its more than three miles of hiking trails and a visit to the Wildlife Center will answer any questions about this wilderness habitat.

Less than 20 miles from Portland, Sherwood is within a short drive from many exciting activities and attractions in the big city. The Oregon Museum of Science and Industry in downtown Portland is home to Samson, a 39-foot long, 15-foot tall fossilized Tyrannosaurus Rex. Samson, who went on display in 2009, is 66 million-years old and is one of the largest and most complete skeletons of its type in the world.
