    About Battle Ground

In the shadows of the Cascade Range to the east and the Coast Range to the west, Battle Ground, Washington is only about 30 minutes north of the Portland metropolitan area. Originally inhabited by members of the Chinook and Klickitat Native American tribes, the area which would be known as Battle Ground saw the first European-American settlers in the 1850’s. The town obtained its name through an unfortunate encounter between U.S. Army volunteers and the peaceful Klickitats. The only casualty in the 1855 conflict was a Klickitat chief and the good senses of the American commander, Captain William Strong, prevented any further bloodshed. Despite the lack of a real battle, the site came to be known as Battle Ground. Early settlers staked claims in different areas of the town leading to one section being named Dublin and another Maple Grove. The first post office, however, used the name Battle Ground when it opened in 1871. The town experienced very slow growth for much of its early existence but with the coming of the railroad in the early 1900’s it was finally connected to larger population centers in Portland and Vancouver. Today, the city is just four miles from Interstate 5, a major thoroughfare running from California through Washington.

A Battle Ground tutor will keep you ahead of the academic curve so you can take time away from the books to explore Battle Ground and the rest of Washington and northern Oregon. Outdoor enthusiasts will want to visit Lewisville Regional Park, a few minutes north of Battle Ground. Originally developed by the Depression era Works Progress Administration, the 154-acre park includes forests and meadows along the Lewis River. The park offers typical outdoor amenities such as a boat launch for fishing on the river, picnic areas, horseshoe pits and a 2.8-mile trail through the park. Located on the crater of an ancient volcano, nearby Battle Ground Lake State Park is 280 acres and a prime spot for hikers and campers. The natural spring fed lake is available for fishing, swimming and paddle boating. It also boasts over ten miles of hiking, biking and horseback trails.

There are several unique activities in the Battle Ground area. To the north, the Chelahatchie Prairie Railroad in Yacolt is a historic railroad which offers tourist centered journeys in vintage railway cars on weekends with special excursions during Halloween and Christmas. Mythic Escapes in Vancouver features reality like problem solving games for adults. One scenario places visitors in Blackbeard’s Brig and gives players one hour to escape and stop Blackbeard’s pillaging. Other “rooms” include Escape from Wonderland and Mission: Escape. The consumer rating website Yelp gives Mythic Escapes five stars.

Battle Ground also benefits from its proximity to Portland. The Portland Culture District is 12 city blocks of museums, art centers and churches including the Portland Art Museum and the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall. The Oregon Historical Society Museum is the best place to discover the history of Oregon and the Pacific Northwest. The museum houses a large collection of artifacts, films, manuscripts, books and oral histories.
