    About Huntington Beach

Huntington Beach California is an area known for its gorgeous beaches on the most amazing and beautiful spots on the coast. People travel from all around to experience these gems; they are almost as big an attractant as Hollywood. On these beaches, you can take kayaking lessons, go paddle boarding, spend the day fishing, or even go out on charter boats for a one of a kind experience. These areas also act as great spots to meet with your Huntington Beach tutor.

Amidst all the tourists, locals, and heavy beach traffic, however, Huntington Beach has not forgotten about economic preservation as well as the needs of the local wildlife. The Bolsa Chica Conservacy was founded to restore and preserve the wetlands of Huntington. They focus on education and restoration as well as community involvement to help promote environmental sustainability and coastal ecology. They are a not for profit organization made up of government, community, and environmental leaders that all strive towards the same goal, preserving the wetlands for future generations.

So what exactly is a wetland? Wetland are exactly what they sound like. Really wet lands. These places are areas that have water for the majority of the year, usually as a run off from much larger sources. Bolsa Chica is considered a salt marsh, as for most of the year salt water enters from Anaheim Bay in Seal Beach and from a tidal inlet. Fresh water can actually be found in certain parts of the wetlands, however, during the rainy season, which comes from the Wintersburg Flood Control Channel.

You might be wondering why we should care so much about wetlands. Wetlands actually serve a lot of purposes. These grounds are often used as breeding grounds for a variety of birds, as spawning grounds for fish, and also as a haven for rare or sensitive species. I’m sure you’ve learned from your Huntington Beach tutor that balance is very important, and maintaining balance in ecosystems is a prime example. Along with that, wetlands actually serve as outlets for excess water. They provide channels for run off, and the grounds absorb a lot of that water. This prevents flooding, erosion, and mudslides from happening during especially rainy seasons. These wetlands also serve a stopping point for any trash that may have otherwise washed into the ocean, which is what happens with man-made run offs. These items wash into the wetlands, where the Bolsa Conservacy cleans them out of the waterways before that water finds its way back to the ocean.
