About Wheat Ridge

Just northwest of Denver, Wheat Ridge is a small suburban city in Colorado with a lot of heart and small town charm. Wheat Ridge prides itself on being a family friendly community, and not far from all of the conveniences and amenities in Denver, just miles away. With a high level of safety and a low crime rate, both residents and tourists enjoy being in Wheat Ridge.

Wheat Ridge as we know it today was first founded back in the late 1960s, so the city itself is fairly young. This area in Colorado, however, has a much longer history. In the middle of the 19th century, the Gold Rush was raging, and many travelers were traveling to the west in hopes of striking it rich. The area was primarily farming land, and travelers used this place for a stopover along their journey. Fast forward about one hundred years, and the area that is now Wheat Ridge was turned into a small suburb named Carnation City. Soon after this time due to mounting pressure to incorporate, Wheat Ridge became an incorporated suburb of Denver in the late 1960s.

When we look back to Wheat Ridge’s agricultural heyday, we see orchards and fields, with small neighborhoods here and there. Today, the city has a number of rules in place to keep the agriculture being grown and farm animals being raised within the neighborhoods under control. In any part of the city, there are three agriculture use that are allowed, and these are community gardens, produce selling stands, and farmers’ markets (with the proper business license, of course).

With a number of historic buildings in Wheat Ridge, one stands out. The James H. Baugh house, an old log cabin style home, is recorded on the National Register of Historic Places. This restored house is a true look into the old west period that the region experienced during the Gold Rush. Surrounded by several other historical buildings that can be toured in the Wheat Ridge Historic Park, The Baugh House dates back to the mid 1800s.

When it comes to schooling, families in Wheat Ridge have a number of options. The local government has put in place the Wheat Ridge Education Alliance, and the purpose of this committee is to ensure educational excellence and coordinating efforts to make Wheat Ridge the best place to raise and educate youth. With public, private, and charter schools available, parents have a good set of options to choose from. For families that feel their young student needs a little extra help, local Wheat Ridge tutors are available to help in a wide variety of subjects.
