Find a Local Tutor Who Gets It

As a progressed in my year of tutoring in high school, I started to learn 'little' things that helped me become a more effective teacher in the classroom. Not only did just make sure everybody raised their hands to confirm that they 'got it' when I gave the solution to the students, I made sure everybody actually understood every step from the beginning of the problem to the end of the solution. I also recognized that some students would be less adept than others at the subject being taught. Those students would receive additional attention, but in a compassionate and non intimidating manner (ie, NOT forcing them to solve a complex equation in from of their peers, only to get it wrong and be subsequently humiliated for being 'the dumb person' in the group)

I greatly enjoy working with students and appreciate being in a position to help them have a better understanding of math. I love to see their confidence soar as they begin to feel competent in a subject that in many cases has been a source of challenge and discomfort. Many times I have observed a student's transition from aversion to immersion and even competiveness and enjoyment in math class. I value my students and take tutoring very seriously and am very professional in my work ethic and attitude. Many references will support the statement that I am punctual and reliable and a positive role model for the children and adults that I tutor.Began tutoring at Ventura City College as a math tutor for all levels up to Calculus 3 in 2002. Worked at Cal State Channel Islands as a math tutor for a special high school intervention tutoring program in 2002. Worked on campus at the CSUCI tutoring center in 2004 and 2005. Have worked steadily as a private math tutor from 2005 to the present. Am very current in my knowledge and tutoring skills in all the subjects mentioned in the "Subjects/classes able to tutor" section. I am no longer current in my knowledge of Calculus and above, even though it is mentioned here that I used to tutor up to Calculus 3.

Science education is my passion, and I believe every student deserves a strong science education to prepare them for the innovations and face-paced technological world we live in. I plan to peruse a life-long career in science education, and until I can start a full time position in September working as a tutor would be an excellent way for me to develop my craft and stay fresh on the course material for various grade levels.

I am reliable and responsible. I would like to become a teacher so I am passionate about helping students. I also feel I am very prepared because of my AmeriCorp job. I have several activities to help improve reading and understand that everyone learns differently. I love math and I am patient enough to help students with any subject. I am also a sociology major so I understand how people work and what to do if one method is not working.

Besides being extremely knowledgeable in the fields aforementioned, I have a strong ethic of making these sometimes difficult works not only approachable but enjoyable. At least during my time as a TA, I found that students weren't dumb or lost (as they often thought they were), but rather that they saw literature as something too lofty for them to understand, or too alien to their everyday lives for them to bother taking it seriously. But with patience and sympathy, and just having a casual conversation about the book they were studying, more often than not there was some sense of a breakthrough, one where they understood what the author was "getting at" (or what they interpreted him/her at getting at), and saw that this point wasn't so foreign to their life as might have first appeared.Regarding personal qualities that would make me well suited for tutoring, I am kind, enthusiastic, patient, learned, punctual, have a good sense of humor, and generally get along with a very eclectic group of people.

I am interested in teaching, and have been a substitute teacher in Hawaii and California since 2004. I am very responsible, and have good references. My last job was Office Manager for a CPA accounting firm. Prior jobs working for the Department of Education as an Autism paraprofessional, in the schools and homes of the students.Mother of 7 children.

I am a 4.0 GPA student at UCSB with a variety of work experience, including private tutoring, assisting special education children, and even military social work. I am very motivated and dedicated to my work, and firmly believe in being patient and friendly with students. I am a people-person and have a true passion for teaching and helping people.

I work very well with young people. I am creative, patient and outgoing. I am good at helping people find their potential and giving study skill tips.
