Find a Local Tutor Who Gets It

I trained to be a teacher at Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo. I am currently a Literacy Support Tutor for grades 1-6. I have been working with students to gain understanding of concepts, built self-confidence, and maximize the efficiency of their learning. I love the opportunity to work with students one-on-one during tutoring. I have found that this is the most effective way to learn and is beneficial to both the student and myself because I am able to learn more about how students learn and think differently. Also, I am very flexible to scheduling needs and individual student needs.

I would be a good tutor for grade potential because I have worked with many different types of students in many different subjects. I have a great deal of patience and don't rush material when its not understood. I understand that one method of teaching doesn't work with everyone and try to match a students needs with my presentation of the material.I was a math tutor at my high school for all 4 years and did private tutoring on the side. I am very comfortable with letting students have their time when learning material and try and present the material in multiple ways to try and find what works best for them.

I'm patient and encouraging, a good listener with a calm nature and positive outlook. At each lesson, I'm interested in learning what my student would like to work on, what math skills s/he would like to master and what concepts are presenting roadblocks. Then we proceed by solving problems in those areas, one step at a time. As a student succeeds more and more, the math becomes more and more fun and after awhile, enthusiasm kicks in!Because math can be very frustrating when it's not clear, students often feel overwhelmed by their math assignments. When that happens, I love to turn them around and put them on the road to success!

I spent a year tutoring foster children for Aspira.I spent an AmeriCorps service year (2006-2007) as a literacy tutor at Mary Buren Elementary School in Guadalupe. I specialized in tutoring ELLs.I tutored a student through Grade Potential from November - June 2009.
