Find a Local Tutor Who Gets It

I am very good with people and have had a total of seven years of work experience dealing directly with the general public and, as stated above, during three of those years I held an educational position. I have also worked with young people as a volunteer youth basketball coach. I am very reliable and have held management and supervisory positions in the past. But mostly, I really enjoy learning and I feel tremendously rewarded when i help others learn as well. I feel that this job would provide very good teaching experience for me as i would like to eventually be a graduate-level professor and/or lecturer.

I have made a career out of working with youth and serving as a mentor. During the summers of my college career, I worked with LeadAmerica, a primier leadership organization that holds conferences for high school students in New York and DC. This job included guiding the students through several trainings, leadership sessions and site visits, and keeping them on schedule for the duration of the conference. In each of these 10 day conferences (3 to 4 completed per summer), I was held accountable for the safety and security of each of my students. Due to my excellent skills in working with youth, I was invited back to work with LeadAmerica every summer during my undergraduate studies.

I would make a good tutor because I have a knack for explaining abstract ideas in a way that people can better understand them. In addition, I am very personable and easy to get along with. I think it is important when tutoring that the student feels comfortable with their teacher, so that they are not weary of showing weakness in a subject that troubles them. It is never easy to ask someone for help, much less a stranger, and I think that I can successfully foster an environment with a student that will make them feel comfortable with expressing their weaknesses and asking for help. I understand the importance of one's education and can be relied on to show up for tutoring sessions on time and fully prepared to work.

In addition to being very familiar with K-12 material, I have taken extra classes to further understand and explain the material. I am very patient, I work with children of all ages on a regular basis. My love of psychology has helped me learn how to work and adjust to the student's needs. I have developed great communication skills and am able to effectively communicate with parents and students to figure out what the student really struggles with and what they need. I have always been excellent with kids and have considered teaching as a career. Although I am currently pursuing general psychology I do plan on either working with the education system or in some field that allows me to work with kids. As far as reliability goes, I have always kept my appointments and only ever disappoint in emergency cases (which is, of course, very rare). I take education and tutoring seriously. I always do my absolute best to fulfill any commitment I make.

I am energetic and patient, both qualities I feel make me an ideal candidate for tutoring through Grade Potential. I have always had a deep seeded love for academia and I come from a long line of educators. I know I can be a valuable asset to Grade Potential as I have the knowledge and enthusiasm to be a great tutor for a variety of grade levels in many subjects. Furthermore I am a confident and dedicated person who could be counted on to deliver quality information and advice to blossoming students.

Ever since I was young I loved teaching my peers. Whether they were older than or younger than me didn't matter; if I was helping them become better educated in their subject of choice, it made me feel good. I also have a general fondness for children, which contributed to my decision to choose tutoring as my senior hero project. Working with all types of kids - ones of varying ages, ethnic backgrounds, and subject levels - has enabled me to be prepared to handle any type of student positively and effectively. Volunteering with special needs students has strengthened my patience and compassion. I am also the go-to for my friends when they need help/tutoring with their class work.On top of all this, I am very reliable. My grandmother was notorious for being late to pick up and drop off my mother, so in turn, my mother developed a very strong habit of punctuality, which she passed down to me. I also take all my work - volunteering and otherwise- very seriously. The only times I missed tutoring sessions with Project Understanding were either when I was sick or had a family emergency. Group projects in school made me understand all too well the frustration experienced when someone does not hold up their end of the deal.

Based on my own experience with tutors as a child, I believe the most important quality is the ability to figure out the way in which the learner understands something. In other words, one must personalize and explain a concept in the learner's terms and not just in a generic formula. I think that this is one of my strengths, and I think it is valuable in a tutor. As far as reliability, I am very organized and have solid time-management skills- and I wouldn't promise a student anything I was 100% sure of.

I would be a great tutor for Grade Potential because I have had past experience tutoring others, and I really enjoy working with children. I would love to see the hard work I put into this job greatly improve the skills of these children as they become successful in the areas of school they struggle with. It would prove great satisfaction and self-empowerment for me to see that I aided to their success. Also, I am very organized and well at time-management, as throughout school I have played many sports and still have been able to be successful in school. Being a college athlete really proved to be the necessity of being well organized and prioritizing. Therefore, I would be very capable of tending to the student's needs and attending required appointment times.
