Find a Local Tutor Who Gets It

Throughout my whole life I have always had this itch to teach. As a child I loved playing "classroom" with my friends and being the teacher. But, as I pursued higher education I ended up exploring other avenues that interested me (Photography, Public Relations, Spanish). Now, that I have a couple years of "real world" experience under my belt, I realize that my true passion is teaching and working with people in that capacity. I think that I would be a perfect tutor, because I am patient and truly enjoy helping people figure things out. Not everyone learns or understands the same way and it is a rewarding challenge to figure out a way to explain concepts to each individual.In terms of my reliability, I am a person of my word and commitment. If I am suppose to be somewhere at 2PM- I'm usually there by 1:30PM. It's also been a priority for me to be not only punctual, but also organized and committed to my responsibilities.

Besides knowing my subject area I am good at presenting knowledge in many different ways in order to adapt to different learning styles. I am very easy to get along with and very motivated to see those that I help succeed in the area they needed help with. I believe that my positive outlook and focus can help those that I tutor understand the material much clearer and retain it much longer. I am a very reliable and punctual person, I am always on time to my appointments if not early.I have taught several Classes to Marines in my platoon when I was enlisted in the Marine Corps. I have informally tutored my friends kids in order to help them with their homework and improve their knowledge in the subject area.

I believe that all students can learn anything if the target information is presented to them in a way that is interesting and relevant . No two people learn the same way. I will tailor tutoring sessions for an individual student's needs. A good teacher will introduce an activity by supporting a student, but allowing the student more autonomy with the content. Finally, a teacher will check for a student's understanding by having a student autonomously perform the knowledge they just mastered. A good tutor can easily see the steps that a student needs to move towards understanding, and can improvise as the lesson progresses.I've worked in many settings where punctuality was crucial. Whether at a coffee shop, office, or at a school, I've made sure to show up early and ready to get to work. I have my own car, I have a cell phone, and my own computer with access to the internet. It is easy to get in touch with me and I respond quickly.

I have a bachelor's degree from McGill University in Montreal, Canada. My major of Humanistic Studies and minor in Existential Philosophy means that I have read and written about countless topics and excerpts from world famous literature. I believe through writing, we not only learn about what we have read, but we learn how to think. Too many young people today are unaware of how much academia can enrich other aspects of their lives. I was lucky enough to have had teachers and professors, both in high school and college, who instilled an ongoing quest for knowledge in my life. It is my highest priority to somehow return this favor to them, and I know that the only way to do this is to keep this enthusiasm alive in every upcoming generation of students. If I am your tutor, you will not only learn the context of the literature under analysis, you will learn the deeper metaphor which you will hopefully go on to apply to other situations in your future and better understand everything around you. My students will learn that academia is a privilege, and a skill set that can be used to enhance every part of your future. The fundamental themes of the stories that seem so boring to so many disinterested students actually hold the secrets to appreciating humanity. Although my tutoring experience is limited, I have done plenty of collaborative projects with other students and spoken individually with many of my professors to analyze their teaching methods. I have a keen understanding of how children and teenagers think, and I have spent years making seemingly dry literature into applicable, practical, and fascinating metaphor. I see my commitments through to the end, especially when education is at stake. I have reliable transportation, and while I may not always be able to answer my phone, I always call back as promptly as circumstances permit. I am an excellent and honest communicator.

I love being able to use my understanding of a subject matter to help guide other people to learn something that at first seems hard but through effort is achieved. I have always been able to take something I truly understand and assist others in gaining their own understanding of something. I am a very self motivated, organized, and hard working person who strives to be friendly and profession in everything I do and I try to encourage those around me to always do their best. No matter what comes up in life, I adhere to every obligation I make and give all my effort to my pursuits all the time.

I am fun, creative, and full of energy. I am enthusiastic about learning and I can make that enthusiasm contagious! I know how to ask questions that generate higher order thinking skills. I know how to push when necessary, but I also understand when help is needed. There is a difference between providing scaffolding and the stepping stones to answers and simply giving those answers away. And I never lose hope for a student.

I was trained as an AVID tutor in high school and also was assigned as a tutor for an algebra 1 class. I also have other experience helping and teaching. while in high school, I volunteered at my church and would often act as a substitute teacher for first communion classes for little kids. I was also invited by the head of the religious education for the church to attend the Religious Education Congress [seminars to improve ourselves and our teachings]. I was also involved in the church youth group, were I grew into a youth leader/mentor. I was chosen to attend a religious retreat specifically designed to assist with this. My first year in college, I was assigned to be the "unofficial" tutor for my ENG V01 class by my professor top assist students in the class who were doing poorly.

Cuesta College (Aug 2010 - July 2011)As a part-time student, I worked 20 hours a week on campus tutoring college students in mathematics, engineering, and general biology and chemistry (for a full list of subjects, please refer to my "Approved List of Classes" under my "General Information"). I also worked with several high school students off campus.I worked with students on a one-to-one basis and in group environments. I developed problem-solving sessions, helped with homework problems, and offered supplementary texts, course notes, and materials I found helped further my own understanding of course materials.Most importantly, I worked with students to develop an intuitive understanding of the subject and to master a top-down level approach to solving problems, which is invaluable in mathematics and science. In my time tutoring, I found this approach boosted student confidence, improved their test performance and grades, as well as peaked their own interest in the subject matter.
