I am California-credentialed in Elementary Subjects (K-6), Special Education, and French (Secondary) and have taught General Ed and Special Ed in most grades K-12. I have a strong interest in all my students and care about their future and what motivates them. I believe everyone can learn and progress towards mastery of those skills that are important to him or her. I view a student’s life and pursuits as important and try to connect them to the material we are studying. In this way, the topic will have more meaning and, I believe, be easier to grasp. I am proud of my pupils when they succeed, and equally proud when they do their best.Once I learn about an individual’s strengths or area(s) of concern, I will start by tailoring instruction to his/her level of achievement and learning style, as well as to any cognitive, emotional, learning, linguistic, work readiness, and sensory impairments. If a task becomes difficult, I will break it into manageable sections until it becomes understandable and will offer helpful learning strategies that can be applied to any subject. Above all, I value honesty and would rather a student tell me he/she doesn’t understand than wait until the material becomes even harder. I am able to develop mini-lessons that are engaging for my students. I also am able to accurately assess my students and change my teaching style for my students individual needs. In addition to my experiences tutoring and teaching, I have thoroughly enjoyed working with a broad range of learners. From my work with young men with developmental disabilities in college, to my time with underserved and at-risk students in Sun Valley, to my experiences with non-traditional students with disabilities at San Diego State, I have had some amazing opportunities to learn from—and grow with—a vast array of individuals.I believe everyone has the right to learn, study and think in the ways in which they are most comfortable and feel the most successful. I also feel teaching and tutoring are so much more than showing—teachers and tutors must work to guide students towards personal development and empowerment. I feel the real benefits offered by teachers and tutors are assisting students in learning to understand and access available resources, develop the confidence to tackle challenges independently, and persevere through these challenges.My years of working with learners have also taught me the importance of consistency and reliability. I have never been a person who fails to keep appointments—I believe punctuality is a sign of responsibility and respect. And personally, I have too much self-respect to show up late when I have committed to an event or appointment.

I am confident in my ability to prepare. First to prepare myself for what I will be tutoring and getting to know my student. Second to be prepared to be patient and work through tough problems with the student. This will require the most preparation and work because in my experience I have found that by helping the students see problems in different perspectives helps to involve them more and helps them to learn the material and not just solve the problem.

I am confident in my ability to understand and effectively convey the material in the academic courses and topics listed above. I have extensive education in political science and psychology at the undergraduate and graduate level, with a focus in research methods, American Politics, and social and political psychology. I graduated from Whittier summa cum laude, earned a Master's degree with a high pass on the American Politics exam, scored in the 90th percentile in the GRE in both the Math and Verbal sections. I have experience working with students individually and in groups for over six years.In terms of reliability, I am punctual and meticulous. I often show up to class and office hours early, frequently make appointments with students outside of the scheduled office hours, and typically meet with the instructor weekly to coordinate curriculum and further clarify expectations for students. I have worked as an independent contractor where I independently scheduled tutoring appointments and consistently showed up early. I am flexible with my schedule in order to accomodate last minute changes in the schedules of my clients.

I am beginning my Doctoral Studies this Fall at Antioch University Santa Barbara in Clinical Psychology, and would like to work as a Tutor while I pursue my degree.I am familiar with the time and commitment needed to pursue this employment opportunity. I have a Masters degree in General Psychology from the City College of New York in New York City. During my clinical interim last year I was employed by Beth Israel Medical Center as a Pediatric Child Care Specialist. My job included playing and working with children from infancy to adolescence.I also have been an Adjunct Professor and a Teaching Assistant since 1999. The minute I realized that Grade Potential emphasizes independent learning on the part of the student, I knew that I would love to work here and that I would be a great fit for this team. Throughout my two years of working at Ventura College, my main goal was to combine "what to learn" with "how to learn". As an SI Leader, my focus was not just subject matter, which I was very confident in. It was rather to teach the study skills that many college students lack. A majority of students at Ventura College are basic skills students, and, as such, need help not so much in subject matter but in knowing what type of learner they are and how they can best study. I like helping students figure out whether they are auditory, visual, or kinesthetic learners. I absolutely love bringing to them a litany of methods that they could use, from Post-It notes (my personal favorite), to index cards, to flash notes, to summarizing, to making acronyms. There's a method that works for everyone and I love the confidence that a student gains when they finally know what works for them. I enjoy sending my students back to their classes and their homes knowing that they can tackle on a problem without a tutor guiding them every step of the way, because all they have to do is look back at the methods used during a session with me and know that they are capable of repeating the method themselves to garner results.I am always punctual, responsible and honest. I make it to where I need to be a half an hour before I need to. I always plan things out extensively and well before hand and I am flexible in that I will do whatever works best for both the student and myself. If I cannot make it to an appointment, I always let my students know with enough time, and will do everything I can to make it up to my students. I always believe that there is always something a student can do on their own, and will email them a plan of what they should try to accomplish if by any chance I cannot make it. I am never going to be a crutch for my students, and I take pride in knowing that they are capable of much more than they believe.
